On this joint honours degree, you will split your studies equally between the two complementary disciplines. You will benefit from a generous choice of optional modules on historical and political themes which are central to an understanding of public life in the modern world. The modules in BA Modern History and Politics History develop your knowledge and critical understanding of the political, social, economic, and cultural structures of past societies.

In this degree you obtain a thorough grounding in the fields of modern history and politics, and will consider how the two disciplines can be integrated. You take anIntroduction to Politicsmodule alongside your history modules in your first year, and continue to combine modern history and politics modules in your second and third years. There is a range of relevant options to choose from in both departments and you choose to write your final-year dissertation in either politics or history.

We offer five curricula in history and three in interdisciplinary studies, plus a minor in history and a minor in African Diaspora Studies. Mount Aloysius students majoring in history and political science have the unique opportunity to be introduced to both areas of study, progressing to upper-division work, rather than narrowly focusing on only one area. This separates Mount Aloysius from other colleges.

The course provides students with an in-depth understanding of the development of contemporary societies (19th and 20th centuries). This development is characterized by the opposing development of globalization and the opening of borders on the one hand and the strengthening of national identities and cultural particularisms on the other.
