The purpose of the Bachelor of Engineering Technology Honours in Mining Engineering is to develop students for both industry and research, such that they are able to deepen their expertise in Mining Engineering and develop their research capacity in the methodology and techniques of the discipline.

The Bachelor’s Degree in Mining Technology Engineering at UJA will qualify you as a Technical Mining Engineer with specialisations in Mine Exploitation, Mine Surveying and Prospecting or Energy Resources.

Mining engineering is the development and preparation of a mine in order to safely and efficiently remove resources while protecting the environment. Resources extracted during mining are used in a variety of modern-day products, from toothpaste to cell phones to cars. As a mining engineer, you will identify the location of valuable and accessible material deposits and devise processes for extracting them safely from the earth for use in manufacturing and utilities.

The objective of the degree in Engineering of Mining and Energy Resources is to provide the training and skills necessary for the exercise of the regulated profession of technical engineering in mines. There are three technologies offered: "Energy Resources, Fuels and Explosives", "Mine Exploitation" and "Mineralurgy and Metallurgy". The degree delves into training related to the investigation and exploitation of mining resources (rocks and minerals, underground spaces, water...). In addition, it provides suitable training in the field corresponding to the transformation and use of these resources in industry: production and use of metallic materials, steels, polymers and compounds.

The degree offers further specialisation in engineering geology and hydrogeology. Engineering geology is the study of the behaviour of ground (soil and rock) and how likely it is to affect engineering works. It comprises geotechnical studies and relates to construction (eg founding or excavation) on and with geological materials (eg construction materials), and to the influences of geological, geomorphological and hydrological processes on construction and development. Hydrogeology refers to the occurrence, distribution and movement of water below the Earth’s surface. The study of groundwater is generally both quantitative (eg water supply, safe abstraction and the influences of pumping) and qualitative (eg contamination, remediation and drinking water).
