The Writing major has been a staple at Lakeland University for more than three decades and has evolved to meet the needs of employers seeking associates with excellent communication skills for both the print and digital world. Our Professional Writing major prepares students to work in numerous fields by developing their skills in research, drafting, and copy editing to meet the needs of both corporate and nonprofit employers through courses like Copywriting and Editing, Technical Writing, News Writing, Advertising and Public Relations Writing, Writing for Nonprofits, Literary Publishing, etc.

The BA in English Literature emphasizes the historical and cultural understanding of the development of literature in English from the Anglo-Saxon period to the 21st century, in addition to the theory of various literary genres.

This BA (Honours) in Arts and Humanities (Creative Writing) degree gives you the freedom to combine the study of different subject areas in the arts and humanities. You'll develop a specialism in creative writing, exploring a range of approaches to writing and developing your skills. You can combine this with a second specialism or choose to develop broader interests in art history, classical studies, English language, English literature, history, modern languages, music, philosophy, and religious studies.

This BA (Honours) in English Literature and Creative Writing degree offers a stimulating and wide-ranging introduction to English literature and creative writing. You’ll have the opportunity to study and interpret literature from different historical periods and diverse cultural settings – including translations – and to develop your writing skills in several genres including fiction; poetry; life writing; and scriptwriting for film, radio and stage.

At Lakeland, students take three tiers of creative writing workshops in three genres, as well as courses in our other fine arts programs - Music, Art, and Theater - to magnify study, extend practice, and enrich experience.

Our English Literature and Publishing degree has been designed to enable you to acquire specialised subject knowledge while developing practical and professional skills that you can apply to a wide range of industries and careers. English Literature introduces you to an incredible range of literary worlds. From classic texts to new and unfamiliar writing, you'll be asked to think differently about what ‘literature’ can be and to explore original ways of reading and analyzing it. We’ll ask you to place your reading in wider contexts, and to draw on other disciplines to deepen your understanding and sharpen your insights.
