Our research-led BSc Biological Sciences degree provides the greatest possible choice and flexibility, allowing you to choose modules across virtually the whole range of subjects on offer at the School. We offer a wide choice of subjects across the biological sciences including animal and plant biology; microbiology; genetics; systems biology; ecology; disease; behaviour; neuroscience; zoology; developmental and stem cell biology; and evolution. As part of our Ecology and Conservation module, we also run a range of impressive field courses both within the UK and overseas, including River Ecology in Wales, Tropical Marine Ecology in Tobago, and Rainforest Biodiversity in Malaysia.

BSc Biomedical science is the science that underpins medicine and medical research. Our Biomedical Sciences degree gives you the opportunity to study a wide range of subjects including human physiology; human anatomy; disease processes and their treatment; biochemistry; genetics and microbiology. The curriculum is informed by the extensive range of biomedical research undertaken within the School of Biosciences and at the University Hospital of Wales, enabling you to receive training in contemporary topics such as cancer biology, stem cells, tissue engineering, gene therapy and neurodegenerative diseases.

Candidates who do not comply with the minimum admission requirements of programs in the Departments of Biological and Agricultural Sciences, may be considered for admission to the BSc – Extended program for the Biological and Agricultural Sciences, which requires an additional year of study.

BSc Biochemistry is the study of the molecular basis of life. It is a subject that has a rich history of scientific discoveries, from enzymology and metabolic pathways to the discovery of genes and the structure of DNA. Today the subject embraces important new areas, such as genomics and genome editing, synthetic biology and protein engineering. 

The University of Pretoria is the top-ranked institution in Africa for the subject of Zoology and is home to the internationally renowned Mammal Research Institute. Zoology is the scientific study of animal life. In the BSc (Zoology) program you will gain the knowledge and skills needed to understand, protect and manage the diversity of wild African animals. This will involve training in animal evolution and diversity, physiology, behaviour and ecology, as well as related scientific fields. The BSc (Zoology) is the ideal program if you want to know how animals interact with each other, sense and respond to their surroundings, can be harvested sustainably and can be protected against human threats. This degree can lead to a career as a wildlife or marine biologist, biology teacher, conservation officer, animal welfare officer, environmental consultant or manager, zoo or aquarium curator, museum collection curator, game ranger, epidemiologist and researcher, among others.

It can support individuals wanting to progress their career within SME and global organisations, covering relevant roles in the life science supply chain from research through development and into manufacturing.

The primary purpose of the BSc Honours qualification is to consolidate and deepen the students’ knowledge and expertise in Zoology and to develop research capacity in its methodology and techniques of it. BSc Honours is essentially a coursework degree of which at least 25% (30) of the credits are devoted to a research project and reporting under supervision.
