The Latin American and Caribbean Area Studies Program (LACAS) offers an interdisciplinary approach to the study of Latin America, the Caribbean, and people of Latin American and Caribbean descent in the United States. LACAS majors examine culture and economic and social problems throughout the Americas. By choosing this central, students not only learn more about a range of cultures and societies but also about global interconnectedness.

The Chicana/Chicano Studies (CHS) major emphasizes preparation for those interested in teaching; specialists in bilingual and cross-cultural education; majors in other academic fields who wish to include an additional scope in their field; students pursuing advanced degrees (M.A., M.S.W., Ph.D., or J.D.); and those entering a variety of occupations such as business, communications, urban affairs, government, social work, school administration, counseling, criminology, law, foreign services and other related fields.

Latin American Studies is an interdisciplinary academic program that focuses on the culture, history, politics, and society of Latin America, which includes Mexico, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean.

Latin American Studies brings together knowledge from the humanities, (e.g., languages, literature, film studies, history), the social sciences (e.g., anthropology, sociology, political science, political geography, communication/language sciences), and environmental studies to allow students to build a foundation in the aesthetic, cultural, economic, environmental, geographical, historical, linguistic, political, and social contexts of Latin America.

Students who major in Latinx and Latin American Studies will engage in major debates within the field while critically examining the diverse histories and cultures of Latin America, the Caribbean and U.S. Latinxs.

Latin American Studies is an interdisciplinary program that includes Spanish language study and coursework examining the history, culture, politics, and literature of Latin Americans and U.S. Hispanics. The program’s interdisciplinary nature allows students to learn about Latin America’s diverse cultures and history, including the countries of North, Central, and South America as well as the Caribbean.

Latin American and Border Studies at Southwestern University is an interdisciplinary program designed to increase understanding of Latin American and Latina/o histories, cultures, languages, economies, and political forms. A central part of the program is the critical evaluation of the ideological borders that constitute nations, states, and peoples, as produced from outside and from within Latin America. Recognizing Southwestern University’s location in Central Texas, the program emphasizes the collaboration of a diverse faculty and student body who seek both academic and activist responses to central questions while examining different disciplinary approaches to the study of Latin America and Latina/o identities. Latin American and Border Studies include but is not restricted to any of the geographic and cultural area defined by Latin America, the Caribbean, and United States borderlands. While focusing on one or more regions of this area, the learning goals for all LAS students are to: Demonstrate a deep contextual understanding of cultural, historical, and socio-political realities. Demonstrate reading, writing, and oral proficiency skills in Spanish. Apply and integrate more than one disciplinary approach while engaging with scholarship and activism. Evaluate important cultural, conceptual, and epistemological differences and their global influences. Students will familiarize themselves with Latin America, the Caribbean, and the United States borderlands through a mixture of academic study, specialized training, civic engagement, study abroad, and discussions with affiliated faculty and visiting scholars.

The B.A. in Latin American Studies is an interdisciplinary degree designed to give students an understanding of the region from diverse disciplines and perspectives. Students are strongly encouraged to spend a semester abroad studying in Latin America, Spain, or Portugal. Majors should also develop proficiency in either Spanish or Portuguese by graduation. High school students preparing to enter the program should not have less than three years of study in either Spanish or Portuguese.

The BA in Hispanic and Latin American Studies welcomes students to explore the rich history and literature of Spanish-speaking cultures. Designed with the utmost flexibility, this program works exceptionally well as a double major and gives students the opportunity to embark on an enriching journey that aligns with their professional and academic interests.

Black Studies at Amherst is an interdisciplinary exploration of the histories and cultures of Black peoples in Africa and around the world. Our courses draw on literature, philosophy, history, and many other disciplines to examine African, African-American, and Caribbean/Latin American themes.

Chicanxs and Latinxs are the largest ethnic group in California. This segment of our population will have a major impact on our society, as its presence translates into an increasing economic and political influence. Crucial social, economic, and political decisions will be made that affect this group and the nation at large. The growth of Latinx-owned businesses, Spanish-language media networks, and political organizations are all indicators of the importance of Spanish-speaking people in the U.S. economy. Chicano Studies majors are trained to analyze social issues, think critically, and conduct research. All majors receive applied as well as theoretical training with a school or community agency to observe firsthand the social issues and theories which they study. These skills are useful in professional life and are valued in the public and private sectors.

A deep and nuanced understanding of the diverse cultures, histories and geopolitics of the Americas, the Caribbean and the U.S. Latino community has arguably never been more relevant or more urgent.
