The Foreign Languages and Literature program at the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown will empower you for a career that spans the globe, connecting cultures from Europe to South America to Asia--and even further abroad.

The Bachelor of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) is designed for students who want to engage with international populations in the US or abroad. It is rooted in a desire to communicate with people from different languages and cultural backgrounds from the dual perspective of teachers who wish to serve international sojourners in the US and those who want to journey abroad to engage with students in their home cultures.

The concentration in Korean prepares students to perform professional work in the field of translation, international relations, local and federal government, transnational enterprise, cultural industry, and teaching careers in Korea or at local public schools and to pursue graduate studies in Korean or Korean studies. The concentration in Korean has an emphasis on developing solid Korean language proficiency skills, technical translation skills, and an in-depth understanding of both South and North Korean society and culture.

The concentration in Spanish provides opportunities to study the Spanish language as well as Latin American, Latinx, and Spanish cultures, film studies, linguistics, and literature. Study abroad and service-learning opportunities are also available. Students in the Spanish concentration can apply to the Accelerated MA program, which allows them to begin graduate study while still completing their BA and to earn a BA AND an MA in as little as five years.

The Classics Studies, Greek and Latin program is designed to provide thorough and rigorous training in ancient Greek and Latin, the principal languages and literatures of the ancient Mediterranean world and beyond. Our majors have found doors for them in a variety of fields: teaching, scholarship (including PhD work in Classics Studies, archaeology, etc.), and careers of all sorts.

The French major offers two areas of study: French and Francophone Studies, French Language and Linguistics. As the student progresses within the major, the specialization of either French or Francophone studies or linguistics will begin through strategic course selections. Students will typically also choose to double major within a different discipline to build a holistic degree plan.

The ability to write and speak Spanish has never been more relevant for traveling, teaching or business—and Northern's online program will prepare you for a rewarding career. NSU Spanish courses concentrate on real-world application. With our bachelor's degree in Spanish, offered online and on-campus, you'll be equipped to apply your Spanish knowledge, practice, and experience to best serve your interests and career pursuits. Through NSU's Spanish degree, you'll gain an understanding of Spanish and Spanish-based culture and language as it thrives outside the classroom. Engaging, stimulating Spanish instruction is provided by instructors with actual field experience in Spanish-speaking countries. Familiarity and experience with Spanish can advance the career aspirations of anyone seeking to succeed as a professional in the global economy. Many employers seek out applicants who speak more than one language and are knowledgeable about other cultures.

An English degree from NSU teaches valuable skills that transfer easily across disciplines and careers. NSU English students learn to write clearly, read critically, connect ideas meaningfully, understand diversity, relate historical context to human interactions, and see others empathetically. NSU's English program is structured to help students tailor their major to suit their needs. Each student chooses from several program emphases, each of which prioritizes different skill sets and content to suit students’ own career goals.

A Spanish degree from Loras focuses on the development of linguistic and cultural competence through active and applied learning, inside and outside of the classroom. Students develop skill sets that prepare them for a globalized workplace through the combined exploration of language and culture. The flexibility of the Spanish major allows students to obtain an additional specialization in their area of interest, giving them an experience that’s in high demand in the international marketplace.

The concentration in French provides students with the opportunity to study traditional academic fields like language, literature, and the culture of French and less traditional subjects such as film studies and the Francophone literature of the Caribbean, Quebec, and Africa. This unique combination leads to a well-rounded liberal arts education that allows students to experience the full spectrum of the Francophone world.

The concentration in Chinese prepares students for teaching careers at the secondary school level, graduate study in Chinese, and research and professional work in government and private enterprises. Language majors with Chinese concentration are encouraged to complete a minor or, if possible, a second major in another field.

The concentration in Arabic has an emphasis on developing strong language skills, including literacy and oral communication, along with an in-depth understanding of modern Arabic culture and society. Students concentrating in Arabic are expected to gain fluency in Modern Standard Arabic and a working knowledge of at least one Arabic dialect. Additionally, students will graduate with a strong background in Arab intellectual history, literature, and culture.

The Department of Africana Studies in the College of Arts and Humanities offers a major and a minor in Africana Studies. Africana Studies is primarily a discipline which investigates the social, cultural, political and aesthetic dimensions of Africana peoples' experiences. These experiences range from earliest human civilizations through the tragic era of enslavement, colonization and involuntary dispersal through forced migration and displacement of African peoples. The intellectual framework that sets Africana Studies apart from other disciplines is that it explores the subject area from the perspective of Africana peoples' interests, aspirations, possibilities, and envisioned destinies. The foundation of the discipline rests on an understanding and appreciation of African peoples' worldview and philosophy of life as the starting point for all Africana intellectual inquiry. The BA degree and minor program offered by the department emphasizes an examination of the theoretical and empirical characteristics of the African world experience from both a contemporary and historical perspective.

Versatile and enriching, the English major is a vibrant part of the liberal arts at Siena Heights. Siena Heights’ unique curriculum provides students with a breadth of courses in literature, literary and cultural theory, and writing. Our English major offers concentrations in Literary Studies and Secondary English Education.

The Latin program is designed to provide thorough and rigorous training in ancient Latin. Majors may leverage the training this major provides toward advancement in a variety of fields, including teaching. (Majors of ours have gained admission to Master of Arts in Teaching [MAT] programs in Latin.)
