What images come to mind when you think about “Japanese studies”? It can be quite hard to visualize in comparison to other majors, like literature and history. This is because Japanese studies aims to engage in cross-disciplinary research and education. Students taking this course will cast aside their pre-existing perceptions of Japan to approach the topic using a range of methods and perspectives including Japanese history, folklore, anthropology, cultural study, research into gender and sexuality, and representation analysis.

The Minor Course for Teaching Japanese as a Foreign Language in SU began in 1988. More than 30 graduates who completed this course, including overseas students, have taken Japanese language teacher jobs in Japanese language institutions in Japan and overseas.

Our joint honours course allows students to pursue their own areas of interest within International Relations and Japanese Studies whilst also providing them with a solid foundation in both disciplines and a range of personal and professional skills which will serve as a springboard for their future career development. The main object of the Japanese Language and Literature Department is to train Japanese Language and Literature undergraduates, with all the powers and responsibilities as provided by law, who have a capability of talking, writing, reading in Japanese and who can communicate with Japanese, translate Turkish-Japanese or Japanese-Turkish and who have good knowledge about Japanese culture, Japanese literature and Japanese history.

Through wide-ranging studies of literature, languages, writing, manners, and customs from ancient times to the present, the culture and spirit of the Japanese people are examined from many different perspectives. Students of the bachelor’s programme in Japanology gain an understanding of modern Japan from a perspective of cultural studies and social sciences, based on Japanese language and scripts, as well as relevant historical foundations. Graduates have the following qualifications: language proficiency in written and spoken Japanese, intercultural competences related to Japan, ability to work with Japanese source materials, and basic knowledge of Japan, history, society, culture, politics and economy.

Under the motto of “exploring cultures through a hands-on approach,” this department engages in cultural research activities that extend beyond the campus. Students study Japanese culture from diverse angles and deepen their understanding through hands-on experiences in one of the four domains of Language, Literature, Thought & Art, and Society & Folklore.

Students study and have personal experience of Japanese history, thought, religion, art, etc., in order to understand Japanese culture as one's own inheritance and source of being.
