If you’re interested in a career in healthcare, a degree in Pre-Professional Health Sciences, Pre-Chiropractic, Pre-Dentistry, Pre-Medicine, Pre-Physical Therapy, Pre-Physician Assistant, or Pre-Pharmacology from South Dakota Mines will set you up for success. These health-based programs will prepare you for admission into a variety of graduate and professional programs, including medical and dental schools, physical and occupational therapy programs, physician assistant and chiropractic programs, and optometry and radiography programs.

The Pre-Medicine program provides guidance on courses, experiential activities, and competencies for students that are preparing to be competitive applicants to Doctor of Medicine (M.D.), Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.), Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (D.P.M.), Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.), and Doctor of Naturapathic Medicine (N.D.) programs after completing their Bachelor's degree at James Madison University. The Pre-Med program is a minor that students complete as part of their baccalaureate degree.

The faculty advisors work with all students interested in pursuing a career in health professions (ex: medical, dental, pharmacy, etc.). We work with both current students and Alumni who are applying to health professions schools and encourage all students that are interested in a career in Health Professions to attend workshops, familiarize themselves with our website, join our emails, and to come to our office for an advising appointment every semester. Thus, we enjoy working with students at all stages of their pre-health journey.

This is a benefit and advising relationship provided to your Allied Health degree if you’re accepted into the track. APU’s pre-PT/OT track will support you in your career goals, if you plan to apply to physical therapy or occupational therapy (PT/OT) school.

laboratory animal science is a fascinating, relatively new field of applied science which deals with the biology of animal models used in biomedical research, and their relationships to man and other animal species in regard to health and disease prevention. It offers career opportunities in the pharmaceutical industry, in government regulatory agencies, and in research and development organizations. The B.S. in Laboratory Animal Science is the degree of choice for students who are interested in pre-vet, pre-med, and preparation for advanced studies in human and animal health-related areas. Graduates also emerge with leadership skills in the area of animal welfare. The degree is the only program of its kind in North Carolina.

The Pre-Physical Therapy/Occupational Therapy track prepares students with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in graduate school. While graduate schools have specific prerequisites, Graceland students will be well-prepared for the next level of education. Physical and occupational therapists work with patients of all ages to care for their chronic conditions, illnesses, and injuries and help them maintain the skills needed for daily living and working.

This track is designed to prepare students for athletic training and chiropractic graduate schools. Upon graduation, students will have an in-depth understanding of biomechanics, functional anatomy, nutrition, and movement science. Chiropractors care for patients with health problems in the neuromusculoskeletal system, and athletic trainers offer injury prevention and rehabilitation, wellness promotion, and emergent care services.

Students interested in pursuing a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree should major in Biology or Chemistry (with a Biology minor). For the best preparation, we recommend a double major in both Biology and Chemistry. Students should review the admissions requirements for the professional schools of their choice.
