The program extends over four years' full-time study, during which period a student radiographer will be allocated to an institution approved by the Department of Radiography and accredited by the Health Professions Council of South Africa for clinical training in collaboration with the University of Pretoria.

Each student in Medicine must apply to the Registrar of the Health Professions Council of South Africa for registration as a student in Medicine, immediately after admission to the first year of study. After obtaining the degree, a student must register with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as an intern, and complete at least one year of training at an institution approved by the abovementioned Council for this purpose. (Students who qualify after July 2006, will have a compulsory two-year internship.) After this, he or she must register with the Council as a physician and complete one year of community service before he or she may work in private practice. The integrated outcomes-based problem-oriented program consists of theoretical blocks, special activities (SAs) and clinical rotations. During the final 18 months, referred to as the Student Intern Complex (SIC), all the program activities take place in the clinical settings.

The purpose of this four-year degree package is to provide qualifying students with in-depth knowledge of the speech- and language development and related processes in the context of human communication. This knowledge inculdes the causes and symptomatology of speech, language, swallowing difficulties and the scientific basis of intervention with a person with a speech, language or swallowing disorder or those at risk of developing such pathology due to the high burden of disease in South Africa.

The qualification serves as the foundational and core knowledge base to register as a Biokineticist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). The acquisition of professional abilities such as competence, skills, values, and attitudes is fostered to enable the graduate to work as a health care professional. Competent and qualified Biokineticists are able to work in a variety of settings, including the public and private sector and in both urban and rural settings. Biokineticists primarily utilize their professional expertise in exercise testing and prescription, physical activity, and health education to enhance/promote health in general, and to prevent dysfunction, restore and maintain an individual’s functional ability, particularly in respect of orthopedic injuries and chronic diseases/conditions.

The purpose of the qualification is to develop a competent professional, who has a thorough knowledge and the skills required for the profession of Diagnostic Ultrasound and who has gained experience in applying such knowledge and skills in accredited workplaces. Successful completion of this qualification will entitle the student to register with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Sonographer.

The BVSc program is accredited with theSouth African Veterinary Council (SAVC), theVeterinary Council of Namibia (VCN), theRoyal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS)in the United Kingdom, and theAustralasian Veterinary Boards Council (AVBC)in Australia and New Zealand. BVSc graduates are eligible to register as veterinarians in these and several other countries without passing any further professional examinations. TheSAVCgoverns the ethics and standards of veterinary education and practice in South Africa. All students must register with the Council at first registration in the BVSc program, maintain their registration annually, and adhere to its rules. Registration with the SAVC is a prerequisite for practising as a veterinarian in South Africa.

The purpose of this qualification is to develop an Emergency Care Practitioner competent in the clinical knowledge and skills required for the emergency medical care and medical rescue profession.

The Department of Anatomy forms part of the School of Medicine in the Faculty of Health Sciences and it offers a BSc degree in Medical Sciences in the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences. Students are trained in the basic medical sciences, which include clinical anatomy, physical and forensic anthropology, histology, cell biology and embryology. These subjects can be combined with elective modules from physiology, pharmacology and genetics. Ideally, students who register for this degree should have a keen interest in research related to anatomy and the basic medical sciences.

The purpose of the qualification is to produce professional podiatry graduates competent in the knowledge and skills required for managing and providing an integrated, holistic scientifically based podiatric health care service to all sectors of society. The qualification develops reflective, caring practitioners capable of integrating principles, theory, proven techniques, and relevant clinical skills in the delivery of a service focusing on the promotion of foot health, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of foot and lower limb related problems.

The Bachelor of Nursing Science [BNur] degree is a four-year, professional, career-oriented whole qualification that allows graduates to register with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as:

A curriculum comprises prescribed modules and/or a research report compiled in conjunction with the head of department or Chairperson of the School. Details regarding the curriculum and syllabuses are published in a brochure which is available on request from the department or School. Students may, with the approval of the Head of the Department of Public Health Medicine or the Chairperson of the School of Health Systems and Public Health, register simultaneously for Part I and Part II of a diploma which extends over two academic years.

The BSc (Nutrition) program involves the study of concepts from various disciplines, including food chemistry and food composition, biochemistry, physiology and human nutrition. An ideal candidate is someone who has analytical skills and a keen interest in the science of food and nutrition.

The BSc Hons Physiology comprises 8 modules and a project which prepares the student for further postgraduate study. The department determines the availability of modules.
