The Department of Geology and Geophysics offers Bachelors of Science (B.S.) degree programs that are designed for students who wish to pursue professional careers in the Earth sciences or in other areas of science, engineering, or teaching. Program graduates will have the ability to apply basic principles of mathematics, chemistry, biology, and physics to geologic issues. This comprehensive preparation in all the physical sciences ensures graduates from the program will be competitive when applying for admission to graduate schools and/or quality jobs in the professional arena.

BSc in Geoscience you gain the knowledge you need to understand how the Earth works and learn how Earth systems interact. You will investigate solutions to society's most challenging problems. Understanding the processes involved in shaping the Earths surface, our natural resources, natural hazards, water supplies and renewable energy can inform us about the impact of past and present changes in environmental conditions.

Students who major in earth and environmental geoscience are curious about the natural world, enjoy solving complex problems in the field or laboratory, like spending time outdoors, and are interested in using or protecting our natural resources. Students in our program are exposed to the breadth of core geoscience fields as well as a wide variety of specialty and interdisciplinary science courses. Our curriculum ensures that students develop analytical thinking, reasoning, communication and problem-solving skills, as well as a thoughtful, creative and inquisitive intellect. Much of our coursework is hands-on and completed in the field, laboratory or computer classrooms.

Environmental Geoscience explores how our planet works. You will study how Earth, atmosphere, and ocean processes interact with the biosphere and human activities. Environmental Geoscience is a diverse scientific program. You will learn about the dynamics and history of our planet. You will discover how that impacts the environmental, energy and mining industries within Canada and abroad. You will gain a wide range of expertise.

Have you ever wondered why and how natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanoes, hurricanes, tornadoes, drought, floods, landslides or tsunamis, occur? Or how humanity deals with the aftermath of such a phenomenon? Have you ever wondered about the sustainability of the human race as populations continue to increase amid decreasing natural resources? With natural resources dwindling and human populations increasing, the field of geoscience has increased focus on mineral resource exploration and extraction. Utica and Marcellus Shale reserves, oil shale, and safe and effective deepwater drilling have recently dominated the media. The environmental geoscience degree program (and also the geology degree program) creates graduates who are well trained to enter such workplace environments. Graduates also are adept at the preservation of ecosystems and the environment. This program is offered only at the Clarion campus.
