Essential to music theory majors are skills in harmony and voice leading, music analysis and instrumentation, as well as instrument studies. As a bachelor’s student, you will also study aural skills and music history.

During your studies, you will receive the necessary knowledge and skills in African-American music, music culture, and performance practices to become a professional. Upon graduating, you may take on demanding roles as a musician, bandleader, composer&arranger, and pedagogue. Finnish jazz professionals such as Timo Lassy, Verneri Pohjola, Aki Rissanen, and Kalle Kalima are all alumni of the Sibelius Academy who have established themselves in the Finnish and international music scene. Jazz students complete studies in ensemble playing, aural skills, rhythm, and arrangement that support their major subject. Optional studies and possible minor subject studies are also included in the degree. The degree also includes language and music technology studies.

You will gain an understanding of different musical styles and learn to work in different ensembles as well as in different types of roles as a musician. Mastery of your own instrument and performing in concerts is at the core of your studies. In addition to honing your solo repertoire, you will deepen your skills in ensemble playing in our own Baroque Orchestra and in different chamber music ensembles, for example.

The core of the programme is weekly one-on-one instruction given by the best teachers in the field. Graduates of the programme have the skills to work as orchestra musicians, soloists, chamber musicians, or music teachers. You can also complete a larger study module in pedagogical studies required for working as a teacher.

With organ as your major subject, you will focus on mastering your instrument and learning about improvisation, continuo playing, and the structure and history of the clavichord. Your studies will include ensemble playing and mastering the keyboard, as well as the history of organ music and organ pedagogy. As part of your bachelor’s degree, you will prepare a repertoire for the Level B performance examination in accordance with the degree requirements for organ as a major subject. In your keyboard instrument studies, you will reach at least Level C in piano, harpsichord, or clavichord.

As a bachelor’s student, you will study not only singing but also piano, vocal chamber music, expression techniques, music theory, aural skills, and music history, as well as pedagogy and languages.
