The Bachelor of Fine Arts, Visual Arts degree program provides students with comprehensive knowledge and practice in the field of visual arts. The core of the degree is a strong studio curriculum focusing on the ideas and technical processes of understanding and producing contemporary art. The Fine Arts curriculum is complemented through access to a broad liberal arts education emphasizing the development of effective academic writing, verbal communication, and presentation skills.

The Bachelor of Fine Arts is a professional, studio-based program offering four-year majors and minors and an honours program. Majors include Painting, Ceramics, Aboriginal Art and Drawing. A major in Digital Media and Design is available in collaboration with Assiniboine Community College. Minors include Art History/Visual Culture, Painting, Ceramics, Aboriginal Art and Drawing.

Our program is designed as a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Studio Art, rather than a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA), to allow students to combine their passion in Studio Art more easily with major or minor programs in many other disciplines. Currently, in our program, students pair Studio Art with Psychology, French, English, Creative Writing, Theatre Studies, Criminal Justice and Public Policy, Art History, and Philosophy.

The study of Fine Arts helps you develop your artistic and creative abilities, and your ability to think critically, write, and speak about works of art. The teaching of art at Mount Allison can be traced back to the opening of the Women's Academy in 1854. It has been an important part of the curriculum since that time.

The iArts (Integrated Arts) BFA is a Level I, direct entry program that emphasizes interdisciplinary creative practice as a collective mode of learning, preparing students for professional careers in the arts. You will have the opportunity to engage with a range of hands-on media and techniques in art and performance, while also learning about the histories and critical contexts of art and performance locally, nationally and internationally. With a focus on student-directed learning, the BFA allows you to pursue your own interests and develop skill sets to support your personal, artistic expression. You will also have many opportunities to work collaboratively and expand beyond traditional arts practice to engage with one another and with the University and community at large.

The School of Art undergraduate studio programs emphasize contemporary research in creative practices in art, design, and art history. Students engage in one-on-one dialogue, group critiques, experiential learning and technical demonstrations, exhibition tours, visiting artists’ lectures, field trips, and more, creating a lively studio culture.

As a student registered with any of the three major areas of study in the Department of Fine and Performing Arts at Nipissing University (AHVS, Studio, and Film), you will have access to unique research and exhibition opportunities that foster professional development through exciting and interactive collaborative ventures with senior artists, gallery owners and community leaders. Specific theory, structuring systems, and mathematical methods and principles used in works of art from various historical periods and contexts will be explored in relation to Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometries. Topics include linear perspective; shapes, patterns, balance and symmetry; ratio, proportion, and harmony; and order, dynamics, and chaos. The course will be one half art and one half mathematics, team-taught by faculty from the School of Art and the Department of Mathematics. This course is also given in the Department of Mathematics as MATH 1020. This is a terminal course and may not be used as a prerequisite for other Mathematics courses. This course cannot be used as part of an Honours, Major, General or Minor program in the mathematical sciences. Not available to any student already holding a grade of "C" or better in any Mathematics courses with the exception of MATH 1010, the former MATH 1190, MATH 1191. Not to be taken concurrently with any other Mathematics course with the exception of MATH 1010, the former MATH 1190, or MATH 1191. Not to be held for credit with MATH 1020. No prerequisite.

Graduates of the Painting major will demonstrate an understanding of historical and contemporary painting practices and be familiar with various techniques, skills, and processes in order to make informed choices as relevant to individual studio art practice. Students will understand a wide range of media, materials and modes of critical inquiry and develop an understanding of critical language and vocabulary relevant to artistic research.

All our majors commence upon completion of our Foundation Year requirements.

Bachelor of Applied Arts, Animation and Visual Effects is available in a blended (online and main campus) delivery, as well as in person.Students who complete the Bachelor of Applied Arts in Animation and Visual Effects will be well prepared for entry level jobs in mid to large sized animation studios, and they will also possess the skills and attributes to collaborate with others in the creative arts to develop independent projects that serve the animation and visual effects needs of local industry.
