The Film and Video Studies degree is the first multidisciplinary undergraduate degree in Virginia focusing on cinematic arts production and film theory and history with core courses in ethics, business, writing for the moving image, fiction, documentary, interactive storytelling, and episodic television.

Students majoring in Film and Television have access to a wide variety of courses that carefully integrate hands-on production practice with studies in film history, theory, and the work of major film artists. FTV students are taught best professional practices through small, interactive classes in the Department’s state-of-the-art digital film and television labs and editing suites. Through class projects and internships, students gain experience in screenwriting, editing, cinematography, and direction/performance methodologies for camera and screen, honing their aesthetic and technical skills in film and television production. To fully complement these skills, FTV students are encouraged to minor in Film and Media Studies, which is part of the FTV Department. In addition to traditional three-credit courses, students participate in the Department’s innovative one-credit workshops taught by practicing industry professionals. These courses not only expose students to specialized niches within the profession but also provide students with networking opportunities.

The Cinema, Television, & Emerging Media Studies also explores the history of national and international cinema, film production, African American cinema, and politics in Hollywood. The curriculum places a strong emphasis on screenwriting and students learn film and television history and culture, scriptwriting for film and television cinematic language, film production, film theory and criticism, African American film, classical Hollywood cinema, global cinema, and producing.

The B.A. in Film Television Production at CSUDH is a hands-on, professionally-oriented program geared for students who want marketable job skills for careers in film, television, and related media industries. Students write, create, produce, direct, and edit their own film features, television documentaries, music videos, instructional films, television public service announcements (PSA’s), and a variety of client-based projects for nonprofit organizations, community groups, and corporate partners.
