The Film and Video Studies degree is the first multidisciplinary undergraduate degree in Virginia focusing on cinematic arts production and film theory and history with core courses in ethics, business, writing for the moving image, fiction, documentary, interactive storytelling, and episodic television.

Whether your interest is in production, post-production, writing, and direction, or all of the above, Rider prepares you for a career in film, television, and new media. Learn the secrets behind successful production in small, hands-on classes. Students begin working with industry-standard film equipment and produce their own work in their first year.

Our innovative program integrates critical thinking and critical making. By approaching both traditional and emerging media as creative storytelling and grounding students in the knowledge of the history, politics, forms and industry structures of media stories, students learn to adapt to a constantly changing media landscape and how they can make a positive impact on society using their creative voices. Students take courses on storytelling in and across media forms. In writing about media stories, students develop skills in analyzing and interpreting media stories. Building on those skills, students will also learn how to tell new stories as well as identify potential audiences and venues for those stories.

The Film Studies minor at Mercer University is an interdisciplinary curriculum that analyzes film as an art form and how it has been influenced by literature and visual art. The major consists of ten courses. Three core courses are required: the Introduction to Film Studies, the Introduction to Film Production, and a Capstone Research Seminar to be taken in the senior year. The remaining courses are cross-listed or offered by departments such as Art and Art History, Classical Studies, English, Journalism, Latin American, Latino, and Iberian Studies, Languages, Literatures and Cultures, and Music.

For this reason, the Film and Media Studies interdisciplinary minor compliments a wide variety of majors. The interdisciplinary minor promotes the development of multimedia literacy, providing you with an understanding of the history, theory, language and cultural aspects of film and other audio-visual media.
