The Film and Video Studies degree is the first multidisciplinary undergraduate degree in Virginia focusing on cinematic arts production and film theory and history with core courses in ethics, business, writing for the moving image, fiction, documentary, interactive storytelling, and episodic television.

This three-year degree is one of the best-known film courses in the world, with an international reputation for its academic and practical teaching. Our students’ films are shown at festivals globally and have won a host of honours and awards, including Royal Television Society Awards, a Student Academy Award and a Grierson Best Student Documentary Award. We operate from a purpose-built studio facility in Harrow, with two large film and television studios, a set construction workshop, a 3D workshop, and extensive post-production facilities. The environment is both scholarly and creative, with all students studying film history, criticism and aesthetics alongside their practical work. You'll learn to collaborate creatively as you develop production specialisms in areas such as writing, producing, cinematography, directing, production design, editing and sound. Full-time students register for five modules. Part-time students register for all the modules except for the specialization modules and the research essay in the first year. Our innovative program integrates critical thinking and critical making. By approaching both traditional and emerging media as creative storytelling and grounding students in the knowledge of the history, politics, forms and industry structures of media stories, students learn to adapt to a constantly changing media landscape and how they can make a positive impact on society using their creative voices. Students take courses on storytelling in and across media forms. In writing about media stories, students develop skills in analyzing and interpreting media stories. Building on those skills, students will also learn how to tell new stories as well as identify potential audiences and venues for those stories.
