The Equine Studies program at Midway provides students with the essential skills they need to enter the broad equine industry or prepare for graduate school. Equine science degree students have opportunities throughout the program to work with a variety of breeds. Students are also able to perform tasks of varying levels in assisting with managing our farm and herd. Students learn basic horse handling techniques as well as barn and farm management principles and practices. Through academic preparation in theories and methods of equine characteristics and needs, students acquire the basis on which to make decisions affecting horse care.

The Stephens College Equestrian program is known for hands-on, immersive learning, a small class environment, and faculty, advisers, and mentors dedicated to your success. Equine studies majors will choose one of two tracks: Equine Business and Equine Science. The Equine Business track is designed for students interested in the organizational, managerial, and commercial aspects of the equine industry, as well as for students interested in advanced performance horse care and stable management. The Equine Science This track is designed for students interested in pursuing careers dedicated to equine health and management.

The Department of Animal Sciences and Agricultural Education offers options in agricultural communications, teacher preparation, preprofessional animal science, pre-veterinary medicine, livestock and poultry management, dairy science, equine science, and meat technology. Courses integrate animal evaluation, behavior, disease, environmental management, genetics, health, marketing, muscle biology, nutrition, physiology, production, and reproduction.

The Animal Sciences Bachelor of Science offers an Equine emphasis. Equine science is the study of horses and their care. During this program, students acquire practical, hands-on equine handling techniques; learn about equine nutrition, physiology and anatomy; and develop business strategy skills.

This option prepares students for entry into chiropractic programs that will eventually lead to a Doctor of Chiropractic Degree with certification as an animal/equine chiropractor. Specifically, the program is designed to meet the prerequisite coursework requirements for Parker University’s Chiropractic Degree Program located in Dallas, Texas. However, it may be tailored to the student’s chiropractic school of choice. To be eligible for certification as an animal/equine chiropractor, a student must be a graduate or have senior standing from an accredited veterinary college or an accredited chiropractic college. Upon completion of Parker University’s doctoral and postgraduate programs a graduate would be able to work with both human and animal patients

Successful completion of the Animal Science track of Agriculture will enable students to apply for acceptance into graduate animal science programs needing a strong emphasis on sciences.

If you have always loved and cared for horses (or even if you have just dreamed about them!), our Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) degree program in equine science will open the path for you to work in many equine careers while concentrating on horse breeding, training, nutrition, and management.

Equine Science majors have the opportunity to develop a broad understanding of horses in the business, recreational, and production aspects of the horse industry. Currently, CSU has the most-comprehensive equine program in the United States with major efforts in research, teaching, and public service. In the major, you’ll take foundation courses in the areas of equine reproduction, genetics, and nutrition, and disease management, as well as over 20 hands-on courses that cover all aspects of the industry.

This Program explores the science of the horse, offering in-depth knowledge into biological systems to bring informed approaches to the management, care, training and welfare.
