Creating a Sustainable World Humans have a major impact on the natural world, and the need to solve environmental issues with sustainable solutions has never been more urgent. Through UNC Asheville’s liberal arts lens, environmental studies provides an examination of our imprint on the planet across many fields, including biology, geology, chemistry, economics, public policy, and other natural and social sciences.

The Environmental Studies minor provides students with a broad interdisciplinary perspective on the relationship between humans and the natural world. Drawing equally on insights from the natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences, the program prepares students to address key environmental and social challenges of the 21st Century—unsustainable resources use, climate change, energy policies, ecosystem devastation, social justice issues, population growth and development, industrial food systems, pollution and waste, and human health problems, to name a few.

The BS EPM course is anchored on the twin objectives of environmental sustainability and sound socio-economic growth. Urban planning courses provide you with present-day planning software technologies, covering Geographic Information System, urban and rural spatial development, environmental hazards and site vulnerability assessment, and Computer-Aided Design Techniques.

This degree is directed toward the implementation of complex environmental solutions, balancing policy-oriented approaches to environmental problems with knowledge on the science behind them. You'll learn how to develop and evaluate cost-effective policy alternatives, generate public and political support for resource utilization practices that lower humanity's impact on the planet, enact legislation, and devise mechanisms that invite or ensure compliance or enhance understanding of the issue.

The original Environmental Studies Program was founded in 1970 as one of the first interdisciplinary undergraduate environment programs in Canada, and one of the first few to emerge worldwide. During the last five decades the activities and the functions of the program have grown substantially with seven-degree options available to students.

This program provides students with the opportunity to develop and integrate knowledge and skills in forest ecology and biology, forest measurements, forest policy, and administration, forest operations, and forest management to provide society with a steady, renewable supply of wood and ecosystem services.

This Bachelor’s degree provides a strong interdisciplinary advanced training in Earth system sciences based on topics covering solid Earth, oceans, climate, atmosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere dynamics and their related complexities.
