The Biology Program at CSU Dominguez Hills is designed to provide students with intensive, progressive and balanced learning experiences in cell and molecular biology, organismal biology, population and community biology, and environmental science.

Local and global societies face an array of environmental problems, from biodiversity loss to climate change to various types of pollution. To tackle these problems, future leaders need to understand the science behind the issues as well as the societal context in which they occur. The Environmental Sciences and Studies (ESS) major provides students with the knowledge and skills to become these future leaders through two major options.

Environmental biology is the broadest of ESF's six biology majors, covering topics from molecules to ecosystems to regional landscapes. Students can choose one of the specialized areas as an elective or minor.

Environmental Education and Interpretation (EE&I) are inspiring professionals who work to help their learners take actions on important issues in conservation, environmental and social justice, climate change, park management and access, and resource management.

Conservation Biology is an interdisciplinary track in which you will learn about the negative effects of biodiversity loss and species extinctions and discover strategies to mitigate them. Our program not only ensures that students thoroughly understand and use biological principles and methods, but also provides an education in conservation policy, including theories from the fields of ecology, demography, taxonomy, and genetics. Your studies are combined with a core curriculum that encourages creativity and critical thinking to ensure you’ll be ready to pursue a career upon graduation or continue on to a graduate school or professional program.

Conservation biology is growing rapidly and ever-increasing in importance in response to the biodiversity crisis. This diversity spans the biological hierarchy and includes variation at the level of genes, populations, communities, ecosystems, and biomes.

The forest health major prepares biology-oriented students that deal with maintaining the health of forest resources. The major is distinct from those in the Department of Forest and Natural Resources Management and its forest ecosystem science, which provides skills in forest management.
