As a major, English offers a varied and soundly-based program that unifies the study of composition, language, and literature.

Students are introduced to the major in English Literature, sharpen their analytical skills in Literary Criticism, and complete a scholarly Senior Literature Capstone project mentored by two members of the English Literature faculty. They also choose courses from the whole history of English and American literature, in all genres, along with selected courses in Irish, Canadian, Russian, and World literature.

English at Thiel College is a versatile, dynamic, and rewarding program that produces top-notch writers, communicators, critical thinkers, artists, and leaders. As one of the earliest majors offered by the college and still housed in historical Greenville Hall, English is rooted in a rich tradition of literary studies. Today, English courses at Thiel are taught by nationally recognized scholars with active research agendas in a variety of subjects. Thiel English combines the tradition of scholarly excellence with a diverse and evolving curriculum. Thiel College offers an English major with a specialization in Literary Studies.

Liberal Studies (LBS) is an interdisciplinary undergraduate major for students who intend to become elementary and special education teachers or to pursue related graduate work. Courses leading to the B.A. in Liberal Studies focus on the subject areas taught in elementary schools as well as professional preparation and early fieldwork. LBS is a California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) approved Elementary Subject Matter Preparation Program (ESM). LBS also offers two Integrated Teacher Education Programs (ITEP) in which students earn a B.A. and a credential for teaching elementary school (multiple subjects) or special education (education specialist mild/moderate).

Literature and Culture courses offer imaginative, interdisciplinary and theoretical engagement with Anglophone literatures in all their historical, formal, generic, and global multiplicity. They emphasize critical thinking and writing. This major fosters our students’ ability to read, appreciate, and interpret literary texts.
