Economics is a behavioural science that studies the conditions under which individuals provide the best possible satisfaction of their needs. It is not specifically about money, things or material objects - it’s about the consequences of individual decisions made under conditions of scarcity. Everybody thinks of and deals with economics whether they are aware of it or not. It concerns everybody and everything, transcending time and space, and is at the core of our civilization and human existence. It is a means of looking at all human interaction, regardless of culture, race or gender.

Economics is the social science that provides understanding, meaning and relevance of human action under conditions of scarcity. In other words, the study of economics enables a more effective use of scarce resources such as people’s time and talents, land, buildings, equipment, tools on hand, and the knowledge of how to combine them to create products and services to satisfy human wants. Economics is a value-free science. It never tells people how to act, it merely shows how they need to act to attain specific results.

Economics may be a specialized area of knowledge, but it is relevant to almost every aspect of our lives. At its core, it is the study of reasoned choice in the context of scarce resources and competing interests. The need to make such choices pervades the day-to-day lives of all of us—as individuals and in society as a whole.

The four-year Bachelor of Public Safety (Honours) degree program imparts the theory and hands-on instruction allowing you to develop a systematic approach to public safety to counter, coordinate, and investigate man-made and natural threats to individuals, information systems security, critical infrastructure, organizations, companies, and governments.

In the undergraduate program in economics, we study the history and current reality of these issues, and the principles and techniques necessary to gain a sound understanding of the choices and problems facing us during our lifetime. Students earning a general BA degree in economics can take a wide variety of economics courses while still pursuing interests in other fields. The advanced BA degree in Economics provides greater specialization. The Honours program is intellectually stimulating and offers smaller third and fourth-year classes.

A mathematics and economics major teaches you to use, mathematics, economic tools and research data to make sense of the world.

Societies are confronted with three basic questions when managing their economic resources. Which goods and services are required and how much of each should be produced? What techniques should be used to produce these goods and services? What allocation of these goods and services should be made? Economists help society to understand why interest rates fluctuate and oil prices rise and fall. They assist society in using its economic resources wisely. Courses in the Economics Department can be divided into three categories.

This program examines the economic, social, political, and legal issues associated with environmental issues. You’ll develop quantitative and analytical skills in economic theory, and you’ll gain a framework for assessing and influencing environmental economics and policies.
