Earth Sciences in a Changing World is an undergraduate interdisciplinary program that offers a rigorous international and comparative perspective on the contemporary global system. Its mission is to foster creative thinking about complex global problems and to equip students with the analytical tools and cross-cultural understanding to guide them in that process. The main goal of the program is to provide basic knowledge in geography, geology, and anthropogenic transformations in the environment and their impact on the lives of local communities and global change.

Earth science is the study of how our planet evolved and the forces that have shaped, and continue to shape, the earth that we live on. In this specialist route available in our BSc (Honours) Natural Sciences (Q64), you’ll learn why volcanoes occur, what fossils indicate about past environments, how the oceans regulate climate and why sea-level changes. As well as gaining an understanding of earth sciences, you’ll develop analytical and problem-solving skills.

Prepare to teach earth science in high schools with coursework that includes chemistry, physics, biology, geology, and the marine sciences. Rider’s Earth Sciences program is designed primarily as a second major for students in the College of Education and Human Services to train aspiring educators to teach Earth science in high schools.

The program in BSc in Earth Sciences provides a general bachelor-level education in earth sciences and also offers the possibility to specialize in Geology. It includes introductory modules in Nature sciences, Geology, and also to Geography. The core of the program is based on the fundamental issues of earth sciences and includes topics in Astronomy, Cartography, Geomorphology, Geophysics, Geochemistry, Hydrology, Meteorology, Palaeontology, Paleoclimatology, Remote sensing, Stratigraphy, etc. while a strong regional geographical aspect is also present. The program includes a limited variety of human geographical courses too.

The Earth Science major provides a broad-based science education with a focus on Earth’s systems, including the geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere. Students gain an understanding of the major features of each of these systems with foundational courses in Earth system science, environmental earth science, historical geology, and earth materials. Elective courses in the program include hydrogeology, structural field geology, geographic information systems, geochemistry, ecology, and field biology. Students can opt to participate in internships, and research projects, or serve as teaching assistants.

The most pressing problems of the 21st century include environmental degradation such as climate change, loss of biodiversity, soil degradation, and air pollution, and increasing resource scarcity urging for a more sustainable use of Earth’s resources. The BSc program Earth Sciences and Sustainable Management of Environmental Resources (ESSMER) is an interdisciplinary science major with a strong focus on phenomena and processes occurring at the Earth’s surface. Our students develop a holistic understanding of the system Earth, anthropogenic interaction with its land, atmosphere, oceans and biosphere, and management of environmental resources, including water, soils, biological and energy resources, and minerals. The ESSMER program is based on a solid foundation in science disciplines and uses key methodological tools and concepts from Earth Sciences and data management combined with the concepts of sustainability and resource management.

Pitt-Johnstown offers a bachelor of science degree in energy and earth resources with concentrations in energy resource geology and environmental geology. The University also offers a minor in geology and collaborates with the Education Division to offer a bachelor of science in secondary education – earth and space science.

This Bachelor’s degree provides a strong interdisciplinary advanced training in Earth system sciences based on topics covering solid Earth, oceans, climate, atmosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere dynamics and their related complexities. With innovative teaching methods which combine classroom teachings and field activities, students will acquire a technical-scientific background of the most widely used and innovative techniques in remote sensing, satellite data processing, GIS, use of drones, coding and basic modelling. Students are provided with specific and professionalising skills that are becoming increasingly important to tackle today’s climate challenges.

The Teacher Education program prepares candidates for certification in grades K-12. The Secondary Education program requires 27 credits of Education coursework in professional foundations and studies and 13 credits during internship. Students apply for admission to the program after successfully completing nine credits of Education coursework in professional foundations. During the course of the studies, candidates may be asked to reapply to the program if their GPA falls below 3.0 in general coursework.

The B.A. in Natural Sciences Earth Science Option serves to establish subject matter competency through coursework as approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC), which waives the California Subject Exam for Teachers (CSET), and streamlines the process for students to enter the Single Subject Teaching Credential program in Science.

Earth Sciences combines principles of physics, chemistry, and biology to understand Earth history and Earth processes. Students with an interest in geology and environmental science can add an Earth Sciences minor to nearly any major course of study and still graduate in four years because of the interdisciplinary nature of the curriculum at Wooster.
