Chemistry serves students who wish to prepare themselves for industrial work or graduate study in chemistry as well as those who wish to satisfy the science requirements in the University Core Curriculum for the baccalaureate degree; to meet pre-professional requirements in many fields such as medicine, dentistry, engineering, pharmacy, and nursing; or to fulfill the requirements in chemistry for certification as secondary school teachers in the state of Indiana.

In pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, students receive a strong foundation in analytical, physical, organic, and inorganic chemistry before selecting one of three options leading to the degree: biochemistry and natural products, environmental chemistry, or natural and synthetic polymer chemistry.

As part of NSU's preprofessional programs, the study of chemistry provides excellent preparation for medical, dental, veterinary, or chiropractic school admission. It also prepares students to attend graduate school or work in the chemical industry. NSU chemistry students pursuing the chemistry major have the option of taking courses in analytical, biochemistry, organic, chemical education, environmental, and physical chemistry, or material science.

The curriculum for the Bachelor of Science in Chemistry conforms to the curriculum guidelines prepared by the Committee on Professional Training of the American Chemical Society and is designed to prepare a strong, liberal arts foundation for future work in industry, graduate school, or professional school.  Students may also choose the Bachelor of Arts Degree in Chemistry Education.
