Applicants who meet the general admission requirements of Brandon University will be considered for acceptance into the Pre-Nursing Year. Upon successful completion of the required Pre-Nursing courses, students are eligible to apply to Year 2 of the BN program. Year 2 of the BN program accepts 48 students per year. If there are more applicants than space available, GPA in the Pre-Nursing courses is the primary criterion for admission.

We live in an increasingly complex world where changing trade patterns, new political alignments, rapid technological growth, pressure to compete globally in international markets and the rapid depletion of natural resources are accelerating the rate of social change. In this situation, we all have questions about environmental sustainability, population decline, safe disposal of hazardous waste, and maintenance of safe and secure access to fresh potable water supplies, access to high-quality medical care and the future of the family farm. These questions need to be balanced against the perceived benefits of continuous economic growth and development, increased industrialization, quality of life and full-time employment.

Societies are confronted with three basic questions when managing their economic resources. Which goods and services are required and how much of each should be produced? What techniques should be used to produce these goods and services? What allocation of these goods and services should be made? Economists help society to understand why interest rates fluctuate and oil prices rise and fall. They assist society in using its economic resources wisely. Courses in the Economics Department can be divided into three categories.

Gender and Women’s Studies (GWS) invites students to challenge prevailing notions of gender and sexualities, and to learn about gender relations as they have been constructed culturally, globally, historically, and institutionally. Through theoretical and practical investigation, students develop the critical knowledge and skills to explore the intersections of gender, sex, race, class, sexuality, (dis)ability, colonialism, imperialism, citizenship, and transnational identity while paying attention to power, oppression, and resistance. Students engage in dialogue about such topics as: feminist and queer activisms, transnational poverty and precarity, diverse masculinities, popular culture and media, reproductive justice, racial politics across borders, and war and violence.

The study of religion is your opportunity to step back from one particular religion and observe all religions in context. You can make useful comparisons and contrasts of the many religious beliefs, practices, and organizations the world over. All religious phenomena are available for inspection, from prehistoric beginnings to contemporary expressions.

This program introduces students to a broad range of technological and environmental risks with an emphasis on how social and physical factors interact in disasters. Graduates of the program are able to assist with all aspects of emergency management, including traditional preparedness and response activities as well as recovery efforts to help people affected by disasters get their lives back to normal, and mitigation planning to prevent future damages.

In Creative Writing classes, students can develop the skills to tell their own stories. Students receive expert guidance in how to write poems and plays, screenplays and short stories, works of creative non-fiction, and multimedia projects. English students will develop skills in literary and textual analysis, critical thought, academic writing, creative writing, written and oral communication, knowledge of historical literary periods, literary genres, and national literatures.

Native Studies focuses on how colonialism – both historical and contemporary – impacts Indigenous nations, as well as on the many forms of resistance to it. Our courses draw primarily upon the work of indigenous scholars, and emphasize indigenous approaches to knowledge. Many span diverse geopolitical contexts.
