Studio Angelico is Siena Heights University’s nationally accredited art department, offering degrees in Graphic Design, Art History, and Fine Arts. As part of these degrees, you can explore art media such as animation, ceramics, drawing, graphic design, metalsmithing, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, video editing, and web design. In addition, opportunities are available for you to combine your art degree with various other majors, minors, and certifications in areas such as business, psychology, chemistry, museum studies, and teacher education, which will help you prepare for careers in such fields as advertising, art therapy, art conservation, museum work, and art education.

The BFA program teaches students the creative and technical skills needed to thrive as career artists. The Academy of Art University’s School of Art History BA program is a unique major that addresses the traditional art historical study through the analysis of visual culture from antiquity to the present. Complemented with fine art studio coursework (12 units), the BA allows for students to engage in critical and research-based analysis of art and architecture, learning to study the visual culture through its role and influence on different cultures and periods. With internationally recognized faculty and access to a rich offering of coursework, the AAU’s Art History BA prepares students for a career in art-related fields: e.g. in art galleries, museums, foundations, archiving, publishing, and public arts administration.

APU’s Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art is the professional undergraduate degree highly desired by serious students intent on pursuing careers or advanced degrees in the visual arts, such as an MFA. The BFA in Art gives art students flexibility in constructing a program that allows them to choose one of five concentrations that is best suited to their academic and career goals.

Liberal Studies (LBS) is an interdisciplinary undergraduate major for students who intend to become elementary and special education teachers or to pursue related graduate work. Courses leading to the B.A. in Liberal Studies focus on the subject areas taught in elementary schools as well as professional preparation and early fieldwork. LBS is a California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) approved Elementary Subject Matter Preparation Program (ESM). LBS also offers two Integrated Teacher Education Programs (ITEP) in which students earn a B.A. and a credential for teaching elementary school (multiple subjects) or special education (education specialist mild/moderate).

Unleash your creative vision and hone your artistic abilities in Northern's fine art program, in which you'll develop advanced visual design skills and be trained to master the use of traditional studio media and tools. We have the resources you need to study art history, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, photography, painting, drawing, design and mixed media. All classes are taught by caring, supportive professors and instructors, and our fully equipped facilities include upgrades for health and safety. Northern has one of the nicest art studios in the region, and seniors have the opportunity to work in a private studio. Student work can be showcased in one of three galleries located in modern and historic campus spaces.

The BA in Art and Visual Technology (AVT) is a liberal arts program that emphasizes breadth of experience in the context of a liberal arts education rather than professional specialization. In addition to completing the university-wide general education requirements and either a foreign language through the intermediate level or a minor, BA AVT majors must complete our Studio Foundations Experience, studio core and research practicum courses, art history, and critical theory requirement, interdisciplinary studio course electives, and a capstone.

The Studio Art Option offers students experience in a broad range of art disciplines, with emphasis on understanding fundamentals of art, developing their skills and appreciating the purposes and concepts of art.

The Art degrees offered by the School of Art, Design, and Art History prepare students to pursue the professional production and exhibition of their own art or more in-depth study at the graduate school level. The art major allows students to develop a visual vocabulary, foster a deeper understanding of the formal visual relationships present in the art and design process, enhance their aesthetic awareness of art forms, and to promote the competency to independently seek further professional growth. The Art major requires 120 credit hours of undergraduate course work, including 78 credit hours in art, art history, and art-related courses. The art faculty is made up of practicing artists who work closely with the students, and students also work closely with each other as they develop their studio practice. Visiting artists and scholars, workshops, field trips and frequent on-campus exhibitions of professional artwork enhance student engagement with contemporary art. Additionally, students have opportunities to exhibit and present their artwork, assist in running on-campus galleries and studio art labs, and to partake in other hands-on art experiences.

An Art History graduate can look forward to a career in museum curation, art advising, art law and enforcement, corporate consulting, appraising and more. Art History students study the history of the visual arts in their cultural and social context. Students learn to describe, analyze, and interpret the form and content of works of art and become familiar with art history theory, methods of analysis and art criticism.
