A BA in Arabic studies is offered through the Department of Middle Eastern and Ancient Mediterranean Studies (MEAMS). Arabic studies focuses on Arabic language and literature as a gateway to the culture and civilization of the Arabic-speaking world.

The concentration in Arabic has an emphasis on developing strong language skills, including literacy and oral communication, along with an in-depth understanding of modern Arabic culture and society. Students concentrating in Arabic are expected to gain fluency in Modern Standard Arabic and a working knowledge of at least one Arabic dialect. Additionally, students will graduate with a strong background in Arab intellectual history, literature, and culture.

Arabic Studies focuses on the Arabic language, literature, culture, history, geography, politics, and visual arts. Includes instruction in philology; Classical Arabic; Modern Standard Arabic; dialects; and applications to business, science/technology, and other settings. Studying Arabic Studies at the University of Cincinnati prepares students for a wide range of careers all across the globe. In the bachelor’s program, students acquire effective skills in developing an interdisciplinary cultural and social approach to the field and an ability to combine an intersectional theoretical approach with an applied research focus. UC also offers a minor and certificate, which is a perfect complement to any major and is designed to attract students who seek intensive studies on the diverse cultures of the Arabic people.

It is the official language of more than 20 countries and one of the six official languages of the United Nations. If you minor in Arabic Studies, you study Arab language, politics, culture, society, literature, film and history. Our language courses emphasize speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, and content courses are interdisciplinary.
