Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) is a transdisciplinary program for students who wish to explore gender and its relation to other axes of power such as race, class, ethnicity, nationality, religion, and sexuality. WGSS covers a complex variety of theoretical and empirical scholarship both within traditional disciplines and in transdisciplinary frames in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, as well as combinations of the three.

Women and Gender Studies were founded model of the “three-pronged” stool: teaching, research, and activism. We offer an exciting array of classes, at both the undergraduate and graduate level that interrogates systems of inequality, including gender, sexuality, race, class, ableism, religion, and region of the world. By choosing to pursue work in women and gender studies, students at all levels engage in an interdisciplinary exploration of gender in social, political, cultural, and economic life; gender in history; women and the media; feminist theory; the relationship between sex and gender; the impact of sex, race, class, disability, and sexual orientation on people’s lives; and the ways in which gender stereotypes influence the self in relationship to others. Students in many courses have the opportunity to investigate these issues from a cross-cultural and global perspective.

The Gender Studies program, which offers a major leading to the BA as well as a minor, examines gender and sexuality from a variety of approaches, from anthropology to psychology, literature to performance.

Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies is an approach that places women at the center of inquiry. The primary mission of Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies is to analyze gender. Students acquire both a local and global perspective on gender. Attentiveness to diversity, privilege, and power, and women's unique creative contributions to human experience are central aspects of this training. More than simply a body of knowledge, Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies encourage students to apply their learning to transform their lives and their communities. Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies offer a vital perspective everywhere gender impacts our world.

The minor in Gender Studies provides a rich, interdisciplinary range of reading and scholarship in those questions of gender that shape culture. Courses are taught by specialists in a myriad of disciplines to provide a well-rounded education in gender and its effects. Greater understanding of the role that gender plays in our lives, law, and culture is useful to a wide range of disciplines and professions. Students planning for careers in education, business, management, or medicine will find the history and legality of gendered relations an especially important addition to their education. The minor in Gender Studies is available to undergraduates enrolled in any discipline or program other than Interdisciplinary Studies.

This interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary academic program engages students with community, civic issues, and citizenship. Students develop conceptual, analytical, and critical thinking skills and opportunities for experiential learning for the study of gendered lives and experiences. They engage in feminist analyses that focuses on the centrality of gender relations, emergence and reproduction of sexism and patriarchy, production of feminist knowledge and theories, women's movements, and feminist methods of doing research.
