Behind the scenes and working hands-on with the campus productions, you will learn to design for the stage.

The Secondary Education concentration is for those who aspire to be middle school or high school English teachers. The secondary education major also has an advisor in the Department of Education and is able to participate in a joint BA/MT (Masters of Teaching) program where the fifth year is completed in the College of Education and Human Development.

The Bachelor of Arts in Music Pre-Certification prepares students for a career in K-12 Music Education. This program, offered in collaboration with the Department of Music and Performing Arts and the Department of Education, leads to the Master in Teaching Degree, a fifth-year program in Education. The University conforms to the accreditation. The licensure requirements for the Master’s in Teaching (MT) include: completing the required courses, earning the state’s passing score on the Praxis II Examination in Music Content Knowledge, earning the state’s passing score on the Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment (VCLA), and completing an internship, which is a twelve-week student teaching experience. Praxis Examinations for Bachelor of Arts in Music (Pre-Certification) Majors All Bachelor of Arts in Music (Pre-Certification) Majors must pass Praxis I during the sophomore year and Praxis II during the senior year. The Praxis tests are required for teacher certification and for admission in the School of Education (Praxis I) and student teaching (Praxis II). The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) is also a Graduate School admission requirement.

International Studies is a progressive, interdisciplinary major that trains students to work in an in-demand field. Applications are up at professional and graduate schools across the country, and employment opportunities in the public, private, and service sectors continue to grow. International Studies offers concentrations in International Relations or Latin American and Caribbean Studies.

The undergraduate program in Communicative Sciences and Disorders is designed to disseminate existing knowledge of speech, language, and hearing disorders, and to provide clinical experience in the recognition, prevention, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of speech, language, and hearing disorders. The undergraduate program ultimately prepares students for graduate study in Speech-Language Pathology or Audiology.

The Arts concentration is for those who wish to pursue graduate or professional study in the varying fields of English, Law, and Medicine, or for those whose career aspirations are in professional writing (such as Technical Writing).

The Creative Writing concentration is for those interested in writing poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, or magazine writing. These courses have all been designed to develop the ability to communicate in a wide range of business, professional, and graduate school settings.

The Film Studies concentration is for those interested in writing for film, television, or other media and for students interested in film criticism or filmmaking. Cinema Studies offers a number of stimulating film-related courses. Recently, for example, students enrolled in a course in scriptwriting focused on adapting the work of novelist Omar Tyree. At the end of the course, their work was critiqued in person by Mr. Tyree.

History serves the University community by providing general education and core curriculum courses in history, geography, philosophy, and religion. The aim is to give students an understanding and appreciation of the evolution and characteristics of world civilizations, cultures, and philosophies. The Department of Political Science and History prepares history majors for graduate work and for professional study, including law school, as well as employment in the private and public sectors. Courses emphasize not only mastery of specific subjects, but also of historiography and historical research.

Sociology is to prepare students for careers and meaningful professions. in sociological research, and policy analysis. As part of one of the most prominent HBCUs in the nation, Sociology seeks to dismantle myths about marginalized groups and their experiences in their home, the country, and society. By providing training, in theory, research, and critical thinking, the department produces students with knowledge and skills essential for challenging the current climate from a political, social, and cultural perspective.

The Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance is designed for the student who seeks to develop outstanding performance skill and musicianship within a liberal arts concentration. Music performance lessons, which pair students with a professor/professional on their primary instrument, are offered, and a variety of complementary activities in music theory, music history, jazz improvisation, and performance ensembles are provided. Students complete this four-year program in preparation for professional music opportunities or for future graduate study.

Political Science is the study of politics: government, law, political behavior, public policy, and political philosophy. The Department has a curriculum designed to provide broad, modern training in the study of political institutions and political behavior for students in the liberal arts and for majors who apply for graduate school. The curriculum also features pre-professional training for law, business, public relations, mass media, domestic and foreign government service, education, the military, and sundry roles in politics.
