UMBC we believe that theatre is an ever-changing art form, responding to and creating new ideas that confront our ethical, political, and artistic ideas and practices. Degree programs leading to an Acting, BFA, a Theatre BA Theatre Studies Track, Theatre BA Design and Production Track, or a Theatre BA Theatre Studies: Teacher Certification Pathway provide students with the interdisciplinary skills to become actively engaged with their art and with the world around them.

Asian Studies is the interdisciplinary study of Asia – its people and cultures, its policy and history, its language and art, and more. UMBC offers a major, a minor, and a certificate program in Asian Studies, allowing students a flexible way to incorporate Asian Studies into their overall plans. Students combine classwork in a variety of disciplines and advanced language study in Chinese, Hindi, Korean, or Japanese. Our students are excellent candidates for a variety of prestigious scholarships and internships which will allow them to apply their linguistic and cultural knowledge to opportunities around the world.

The Bachelor of Arts in Leadership in Hospitality and Event Management includes a focus on leadership, a liberal arts foundation, and a core of industry-specific courses which will prepare you to enter an in-demand field at the leadership level.

The minor is open to students with a major in any discipline. Reflecting the reality that modern astronomy is really a subfield of physics, there are 4 initial core physics courses which are required (totaling 14 credits). These are to be followed by a number of optional courses which can be taken to make up the required 9 total astrophysics credits. Note that senior research (PHYS 499) with one of the faculty in astrophysics (see here) may count towards the minor, for a maximum of 3 total credits (subject to department approval). Interested students may wish to compare with the physics minor offered by the department; in a sense the Astrophysics minor is a more restrictive version of the physics minor and only one of the two will be granted (one cannot get both a physics and an astrophysics minor).

The American Studies major leading to a bachelor’s degree consists of 36 credits 15 credits of American Studies core courses, 18 credits of coursework distributed across 3 core themes, and 3 credits of applied experience internship, student teaching, service learning, applied research.

Ancient Studies Focusing on the study of the cultures of Ancient Greece and Rome, Ancient Studies provides a rigorous, interdisciplinary education that spans 3,500 years of human history and continues to be relevant in the present. In addition to courses in Greek and Latin language that form the foundation of the discipline, the department offers an array of fascinating courses in the myth and literature, archaeology and history, politics, society, and cultures of the Ancient world.

The Department of Visual Arts carries out UMBCs mission as a dynamic public research university. Our diverse, internationally acclaimed faculty are committed to guiding future artists and design professionals to think independently, work imaginatively, and implement creative solutions to real world problems. By providing an environment of collaborative research and interdisciplinary learning, we enable experimentation across media.

Political Science can expect to receive excellent instruction and training from the Political Science faculty, both on the main campus and on our campus at Shady Grove. Our students excel in the classroom and are involved in many different extracurricular activities, such as internships, research, study abroad, and participation in our clubs.

Philosophy is sometimes described as the study of the true, the good, and the beautiful, but a more useful characterization might describe some of the standard areas of philosophy. Metaphysics studies what there is and the role of humans in the structure of things.

Bachelor of Arts in Management of Aging Services This degree aims to prepare students for entry-level professional positions in the management of aging services. The undergraduate major provides a strong knowledge base in human aging an understanding of regulatory policy fiscal issues involved in aging service provision; and fundamental management skills.

The UMBC Physics Department has 25 faculty, roughly 56 graduate students, and 120 undergraduate majors. Our department’s research is centered in 4 main areas: astrophysics, atmospheric physics, condensed matter physics, and quantum optics and quantum information.
