The Finance Major at Loras College is directed toward students seeking careers in the financial services industry, as well as those wishing to enhance their knowledge and skills of finance for other personal and professional endeavors. The financial services industry includes careers in banking, insurance, pension management, corporate finance, and investments. Our students have been successful in securing fulfilling career positions in these areas at companies like Goldman Sachs, Principal Financial, Prudential, Heartland Financial, Lazard Ltd, IBM, the Chicago Board of Trade, and many others.

The History major at Loras College combines the personal attention students receive at a small private college with a broad curriculum that is usually available only at a large institution. We offer courses that cover every historical period around the globe. Loras places special emphasis on developing academic skills, such as identifying historical problems that need further inquiry, finding and evaluating primary sources, and making an original and sophisticated argument based on the critical investigation of evidence. The historical discipline values these skills as central to becoming a historian, and additionally, the ability to work in a learning community and produce new knowledge through the interpretation of primary materials can be applied to many career choices.

The Loras Politics major offers courses in American and global politics and political thought. Professors emphasize multiple perspectives, critical thinking, and lively student interaction.

The Marketing program at Loras combines active learning and real experiences with a flexible curriculum and an integrated global perspective. This produces well-prepared and valued graduates to meet employment demand that’s expected to rise by about 30% for marketing roles through 2022.

The Accounting major at Loras College offers the chance to gain the knowledge and skills needed to prepare for the Certified Public Accountant exam and go on to a promising career as an accountant. Classes offered include Intermediate Accounting, Cost Accounting, Tax, Auditing, Accounting Systems, Governmental and Not-for-Profit Accounting, and Advanced Financial Accounting, with Accounting Systems offered as a J-Term experiential course.

Earn a Psychology degree at Loras and graduate with a solid foundation in holistic psychological study. With our Sociology major, you’ll gain the skills and knowledge to understand how institutions and organizations shape individual life experiences, including systematically analyzing the behavior patterns of social, political, religious, educational, and business organizations to identify the causes of problems such as violence, crime, divorce, poverty, racism, sexism and more.

A Spanish degree from Loras focuses on the development of linguistic and cultural competence through active and applied learning, inside and outside of the classroom. Students develop skill sets that prepare them for a globalized workplace through the combined exploration of language and culture. The flexibility of the Spanish major allows students to obtain an additional specialization in their area of interest, giving them an experience that’s in high demand in the international marketplace.

The Loras College Criminal Justice major draws upon the perspectives of a number of academic disciplines, including criminal justice, social work, sociology, psychology, and political science. Students who graduate from Loras with a Criminal Justice degree are able to apply their knowledge, assess the consequences of alternative courses of action, and make decisions based upon appropriate, legal, social, and ethical considerations. The Criminal Justice learning experience culminates in a field instruction component that puts into practice much of the knowledge and skills learned in the classroom.

Our Secondary Education degree prepares candidates to work in the general education classroom at the middle and high school levels. Instructors carefully structure and coordinate field experiences, giving students the opportunity to practice several teaching methods that will prepare them for a successful student teaching experience and career. A signature part of the Secondary Education program at Loras is the Professional Development School (PDS). Each Loras student will participate in diverse field experiences in technology-rich public and private schools.

The International Studies major is a rigorous program that’s unique in that it draws its faculty from several different departments to create a truly interdisciplinary curriculum. Students develop an in-depth understanding of major themes in international relations, current global issues, recent world history, and modern cultures and societies, along with gaining analytical skills suited for the study of other societies and international issues.

Religion begins with a desire to understand the purpose of existence; theologies argue that certain reasons for existence are unique and true. At Loras, majors in Religious Studies and Theology majors expand their worldviews and reflect on the complexities of religions and spirituality in the modern world.
