Students in the Asian Studies program learn about the traditional and modern societies of Asia through teaching, research, and service. They graduate equipped to enter a variety of career paths.The program fosters an understanding of the cultural, social, and political relationships among the various countries in Asia, North America, and Europe.

Social science begins with the insight that our “common sense” or “obvious” ideas about how human individuals, groups, communities, and societies behave don’t match up with the way they actually behave. Social science is a systematic way of getting past “common sense” to study human beings' surprising cognitive and social lives. We find that various contexts shape the way human beings think and the way human societies act.

The Adolescence Education: Social Studies program requires completion of an appropriate arts and sciences major, chosen from one of the following majors: anthropology, economics, history, politics or sociology, while simultaneously completing a second major in education, with courses in pedagogy that are specific to the content that will be taught

The Behavior Studies program prepares students for various careers in clinical, social, educational, industrial, and law enforcement environments.

Choose an interdisciplinary major that builds on Rivier’s history in the liberal arts and prepares students for a variety of careers in the public, private, and non-profit sectors. Launching in Fall 2025, the Humanities and Social Sciences interdisciplinary major will provide students with a distinctive, integrated program using applied, interactive, and experiential learning that draws upon the disciplines of English, history, political science, philosophy, religion, and sociology.
