This BA (Honours) in Arts and Humanities (Religious Studies) degree gives you the freedom to combine the study of different subject areas in the arts and humanities. You'll develop a specialism in religious studies, exploring religions as an aspect of human culture, society and politics. You can combine this with a second specialism or choose to develop broader interests in art history, classical studies, creative writing, English language, English literature, history, modern languages, music, and philosophy.

The Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies Major introduces the study of major world religions while developing their reasoning and communication skills. Students gain an appreciation of the transformative power and importance of religion from multifaceted angles, and grasp their historical roots.

Perhaps a quarter of the world's population can be described as either Hindu or Buddhist, and many more live in cultures that have been deeply influenced by these religious traditions over the past two-to-three thousand years. However, to many people, Hinduism and Buddhism remain exotic, unfamiliar faiths. What do Hindus do? Who was the Buddha? Why are there so many deities? What is enlightenment?

This is one of several specialist routes available in our BA (Honours) Social Sciences (R23) degree. You'll study core modules in interdisciplinary social science and sociology, giving you a firm grounding in ideas central to the social sciences. This will be combined with exploring a variety of phenomena mediated by religion, from consumerism and the environment, atheism and Hindu nationalism, to racism, the urban environment and contemporary pilgrimage.

The Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies teaches students the main message of the Bible to prepare for professional church work, future studies, or to be a more informed lay leader in their Christian congregation. This prepares Christian students for church work or to know God on a deeper level.

In this BA (Honours) in Religion, Philosophy and Ethics qualification, you’ll explore human systems of thought and practice, both ‘secular’ and ‘religious’, in ways which allow you to engage with wide-ranging and often controversial issues affecting different cultures and societies across Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe.
