The BA (Hons) in Documentary Photography is for aspiring visual storytellers who are curious, socially engaged, and ready to explore the world through their lens. This blends critical thinking with hands-on practice as you define your creative voice and build a documentary photography practice.

Our one year intensive Honours degree offers you the opportunity to produce a self-directed body of creative practice work majoring in Photography, Illustration, Graphic Design, Multimedia, or Art Direction. In addition to Creative Practice, your degree also includes Visual Studies and Contextual Studies.

Photography at Bath Spa University gives you space to explore, actively enquire, challenge and define the role of the photographic image. We’re committed to teaching the craft of photography. Analogue techniques are thoroughly explored and equip you to engage more proficiently with digital methods. We explore the ways in which digital technological change impacts on photography, and we also fully utilise new technologies.

The photographer becomes an artist when he is provided with creativity, knows the technique, and adopts a multidisciplinary approach: a professional able to exploit his talent and operate dynamically in the world of image, exploring areas such as reportage, advertising, and fashion photography, photo book, fine art, video, and multimedia.

Fashion Photography at Bath Spa University gives you the space to explore, actively enquire, challenge and define the role of the photographic image in fashion. Alongside the development of your technical skills and understanding of visual language, you'll explore the critical and ethical challenges facing Fashion Photography in a contemporary and global context.

This is a course in the creative and critical practice of photography. You will be encouraged to develop your own visual practice through an appreciation of the history of the medium as well as a critical understanding of it's wider social and cultural significance. You will also explore a wide range of relevant contemporary theories and debates designed both to stimulate a critically engaged practice and to better prepare you for a range of related careers. You will also gain cognitive and transferable skills necessary for lifelong personal and professional development.

The Photography course is provided in the framework of the Visual Arts School and offers, along with a specific study plan and liberal arts, several crossover courses to enable students to acquire multidisciplinary skills and strategies. Through lessons and workshops supplied by major photographers and curators on the national and international scene, students experience the various fields of photography: commercial, editorial, documentary, and artistic, to learn to translate abstract concepts and photographic ideas into observable representations.

The new course in Fashion Marketing and Promotion has been designed to cater for creative, passionate and motivated students who want to pursue a creative degree within the fashion industry and develop a solid understanding of business in our digital era.
