The musicology curriculum covers a wide range of topics, including art music, traditional music, and popular music around the world. We investigate not only the musical sound itself but also its cultural and intellectual contexts that inform the specific musical practice. The theater studies curriculum not only covers Japanese classical plays and modern Western theater, works that are considered “theater” in the narrow sense of the term, but also goes beyond that definition to explore cinema, opera, musicals, dance, and performing arts from around the world.

Bachelor of Arts in Musicology minor focuses on the history and cultural contexts of music. Studying the development of music through time, you examine the forms, methods, and functions of music in Western and non-Western cultures. Coursework covers Music Fundamentals, Music Analysis, Music Literature, Music History, Independent Study in Fine Arts, and Perspectives in Music (World Musics, Hollywood and Broadway, Jazz and the American Experience.)
