The Liberal Studies program represents CUNY’s first online BA in the liberal arts and sciences. Unlike most majors, which emphasize the mastery of a single discipline, Liberal Studies affirms the intellectual and professional value of learning to think across conventional disciplinary lines.

The liberal studies program fosters the strengths both prospective employers and graduate and professional schools value in a liberal-arts degree: rigorous academics, critical thinking and effective communication. In addition, it encourages students to explore points of contact between disciplines and allows them to incorporate biblical perspectives into an academically challenging degree program.

The Liberal Arts major at Peru State builds on the broad General Studies foundation at the college or on a similar foundation in the previous experience of transfer students.

The Liberal Studies/Elementary Bachelor of Arts program is the teacher preparation program for K-8 teachers, offered through the College of Arts & Sciences and the School of Education's Curriculum & Instruction department. The program includes courses in English literature, fine arts, humanities, math and science, social sciences, and teaching methodology courses.

The Liberal Studies (LS) major has a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary curriculum that encompasses many areas of knowledge in the humanities, arts, and sciences. The program consists of innovative courses in literature, performance, communication, education, environmental studies, natural and social sciences, humanities, and the creative arts. This richly diversified major gives students skills and knowledge that will serve them well for work and life in our increasingly complex and interconnected world.

Historically, the liberal arts were considered the branches of study fit for free men (liber is Latin for “free”). They were contrasted with skills needed for more mechanical trades and professions. Today, as liberal arts majors at Southern Virginia, students read, study, and investigate the main issues in a range of liberal arts disciplines (such as history, literature, art, philosophy, and the sciences) and thereby become well-practiced critical thinking and reasoning and aesthetic judgment.
