International Studies is an interdisciplinary, standalone major that creates a unique experience and knowledge base for each student. It offers four specialty tracks: Asian Studies, European Studies, Latin American Studies, and International Affairs.

Globalisation is shaping the world in which we live. In the BA International Studies, you have the opportunity to study one of eight world regions within the context of global interactions. The aim of the bachelor's degree in international studies is to train intellectuals who are able to navigate the world of international relations, who are able to adequately represent national and regional interests, who are sensitive to global problems and who are open to learning about other cultures. Those who are able to maintain international contacts, deal with creative problems and solve complex tasks flexibly in domestic or international corporate, governmental and non-governmental organizations, as well as who are prepared to continue their studies in a master's degree.

This degree is the core undergraduate programme in the School of International Studies. Building on the foundation training in Year 1, the core modules in Years 2-4 are designed to enhance students' knowledge and understanding of past and present societies and cultures, especially in Europe, North America and Asia.

The interdisciplinary programme builds on the International Studies degree model to foster an integrated awareness of global forces today combined with extensive language training in Spanish/German/French/Japanese/Chinese. The course covers a wide spectrum from history, politics, and international relations to cultural studies and modern languages.

The BA Dual Honors is our most advanced arts program. It combines two in-depth training, the first in history, and the other in international studies or intercultural leadership.

The International Studies major is a rigorous program that’s unique in that it draws its faculty from several different departments to create a truly interdisciplinary curriculum. Students develop an in-depth understanding of major themes in international relations, current global issues, recent world history, and modern cultures and societies, along with gaining analytical skills suited for the study of other societies and international issues.

The Bachelor of Arts in International Studies is a multi-disciplinary program that prepares students to be leaders in an increasingly interdependent global community. This multi-disciplinary major teaches us to critically examine world affairs and pursue advanced degrees and/or careers in international law, diplomacy, politics, and business.

Brexit will mean more direct interaction with the EU and with individual member states on the continent. A better knowledge of the European Union, and Ireland’s place within it, is more needed than ever before. An understanding of Europe requires knowledge of its historical origins, of its economic, legal and societal aspects, and of its political institutions. The BA in European Studies develops knowledge and understanding of all of these areas linking them with knowledge of the cultures and languages of key member states. The University of Limerick has long led the way in Ireland in this field, with the result that this degree is one of the longest established European Studies degree programmes in Europe.

This program provides a multi-disciplinary degree that incorporates courses in Philosophy, Economics, and International Relations, and is taught entirely in English, it attracts students from around the world.

Global and Development Studies (GLAD) is an interdisciplinary program, which aims to equip students with a fundamental understanding of processes of globalization in various spheres of human activity: law, politics, economy, history, social relations, culture, and communication. Students gain core knowledge of the very phenomena of globalization and international development as well as specialize in their various aspects and influence they have on the contemporary world. The program is structured in such a way that it allows students to focus either on a selected part of the world, or specific global problems and challenges.

This degree uniquely positions you to explore some of the world’s most pressing problems while preparing for a career with an international focus: in business, diplomacy, policy development, and for advocacy in a global civil society.

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) is Otago's most flexible undergraduate degree program, enabling students to study from a selection of more than 40 arts and social science subjects, as well as papers offered elsewhere in the University. Academic breadth is complemented by in-depth knowledge gained through majoring in one or two subjects with the option of minors in one or two others.
