This BA (Honours) in Arts and Humanities (History) degree gives you the freedom to combine the study of different subject areas in the arts and humanities. In this degree, you’ll study the ancient and classical worlds through both textual and material remains, with the added flexibility of working from home.

History studies past human experience in all its aspects: economic, social, political, cultural, intellectual, scientific, and technological. Our temporal scope spans the ancient past to modern times, while cultural and spatial interests involve the peoples of Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Over the course of their studies, art history students hone their writing and research skills and are introduced to the variety of professional applications of their degree, from academia to museums to the corporate world.

Course topics in the art history specialization range from the study of ancient to contemporary art and include classes on non-Western art and critical studies. The program consists of 16 courses earning 48 credits, with an additional 6 credits of Department of Arts, Culture, and Media (ACM) departmental requirements. History majors learn to analyze and draw objective conclusions. While history is the study and interpretation of past events, the research and analytical skills learned in history courses are applicable in nearly every field of professional endeavor. Traditionally, history majors have also been employed in historical site interpretation, research, historic preservation, or archival and museum work. Many history majors also find careers in the electronic and print media, politics, government service, non-profit organizations, and lobbying, among other areas. In addition to developing an understanding of history, a history degree builds and enhances required academic skills for successful completion of graduate study or law school, making the history degree a preferred pre-law major.

The History minor is designed to give students an overview of recent world history, an introduction to history as a way to understand human development, and a sampling of historical experiences in selected regions and time periods.
