Health & Medical Humanities is an interdisciplinary field that uses humanistic perspectives to understand health and healthcare. The humanities have the potential to teach us about the embodied human experience, including suffering, healing, well-being, and flourishing. The B.A. degree in Health & Medical Humanities complements the movement toward primary and patient-centered care in healthcare and provides an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the effects of health, wellness, and illness on patients, health professionals, and on the social worlds in which they live and work.

Pitt-Johnstown offers a broad interdisciplinary major that is a study of the social sciences. All baccalaureate degree programs in the social sciences require completion of a core of introductory courses across all social science fields, many of which offer international and applied perspectives.

The Bachelor of Arts in Integrative Studies brings together research, theory, and practice across numerous disciplines. This is an interdisciplinary major designed primarily for students who desire a broad, multidisciplinary general education in the best tradition of the liberal arts and who wish to avoid the specialization of a major field. (Note: these requirements are for those students majoring in Liberal Studies only, not for those students majoring in both Liberal Studies and Education.)

International Studies is an interdisciplinary, standalone major that creates a unique experience and knowledge base for each student. It offers four specialty tracks: Asian Studies, European Studies, Latin American Studies, and International Affairs.

Our interdisciplinary studies bachelor’s degree allows you to maximize any prior college credit, military training, or on-the-job training you might have and turn it into credit toward degree completion. You have the possibility of earning your degree quicker and in a more affordable manner. To represent the variety of courses integrated into this program, we named our degree “interdisciplinary studies” as opposed to “general studies,” which you might see at other universities.

The Women’s and Gender Studies B.A. in the Interdisciplinary Studies program prepares students to understand how gender and sexuality shape their lives, the lives of others, the production of knowledge, and social institutions. The International Studies major is a rigorous program that’s unique in that it draws its faculty from several different departments to create a truly interdisciplinary curriculum. Film Studies is an interdisciplinary program that allows for professional advancement through the utilization of film as an art form, conduit of popular culture, community-building tool and agent of change. The interdisciplinary B.A. degree in Film & Media Production allows students from all disciplines and backgrounds to develop knowledge of film and media as an art form and community-building tool while fulfilling their degree program. Through a wide variety of course offerings, the Program is designed for students who wish to create film, study film, and to use film as a lens through which to view the world. Film and video production are taught along with courses in Africana Studies, American Studies, Art, Communications, English, History, Languages and Culture Studies, Political Science, Religious Studies, Theatre, and Women’s and Gender Studies.

The Bachelor of Arts is conferred upon students who have satisfactorily completed a minimum of 120 semester hours of academic work, and is offered only through the part-time evening program. This program is designed to meet two major objectives:  to provide students with a solid introduction to the liberal arts and to allow students (through judicious use of their electives) the flexibility to combine those studies with their vocational or avocational interests.
