The Bachelor of Arts in Environmental and Sustainability Studies emphasizes a social science and humanities perspective on environmental and sustainability challenges and opportunities. The program provides a strong philosophical, social and scientific basis for understanding the full diversity of environmental and sustainability issues, and positions students to be effective agents of social and environmental innovation, who can promote mitigation of, and/or adaptation to, environmental challenges. Environmental Studies program offers either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science. Within Environmental Studies core courses, students gain practical skills in community engaged research, geographical information systems (GIS), environmental impact assessment, policy analysis, lab and field research, statistical analysis, and develop strong oral and written communication abilities.

Environmental challenges are among the most pressing issues facing citizens in the 21st century. Few local, national, or international conflicts lack an environmental dimension. Understanding these environmental problems requires an interdisciplinary approach that integrates the natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, and the arts. We cannot adequately understand an issue like water pollution through a single disciplinary perspective; it involves anthropology, biology, business, chemistry, economics, geosciences, government, history, literature, and sociology. The mission of Environmental Studies and Sciences is to help students develop literacy at the intersection of these disciplines.

A Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Environmental Studies is an interdisciplinary degree program that focuses on understanding and addressing environmental issues from various perspectives, including scientific, social, political, and economic aspects. This program typically spans four years and is offered by many colleges and universities worldwide.

Our environmental studies program empowers students to develop the knowledge, skills, and understanding required to address the complex environmental concerns that face our world today. An interdisciplinary approach integrates the natural sciences, the social sciences, and the humanities.

This degree is directed toward the implementation of complex environmental solutions, balancing policy-oriented approaches to environmental problems with knowledge on the science behind them. You'll learn how to develop and evaluate cost-effective policy alternatives, generate public and political support for resource utilization practices that lower humanity's impact on the planet, enact legislation, and devise mechanisms that invite or ensure compliance or enhance understanding of the issue.

Study of the environment is one of StFX’s core teaching and research strengths. At our small, primarily undergraduate university, students have the chance to work closely with faculty who are leaders and innovators in climate and environmental issues.
