Development Studies at StFX is for undergraduate students who want to learn about development theories and practices, particularly at the community level, in the Global South, Canada, and the Atlantic region. Our interdisciplinary program grows out of the Antigonish Movement, a social and economic movement grounded in community-based development and the global outreach of the Coady International Institute.

As one of the few universities in North America offering the study of Celtic languages, literature, and history of the Celts from about 800 BC to present, you will have unique opportunity to learn in this broad field at either the BA or MA level. Celtic Studies has as its core the languages, literatures, cultures, and histories of Celtic-speaking peoples, from the Continental Celts of ancient Gaul to the modern survivals in Scotland, Ireland, the Isle of Man, Wales, Cornwall, and Brittany.

StFX Music is a pioneer in jazz education in Canada.  We offered the country’s first university degree in Jazz Studies in 1983. At StFX, you’ll receive individual instruction from some of Canada’s leading music educators in studio, classroom and rehearsal environments, honing your performance and compositional skills. Our strengths are in our teaching and course content. We provide direct face-to-face private studio lessons with faculty, and our courses teach you how to use the best resource available: you. As a Music major, you’ll have courses in music theory, composition, arranging, private studio lessons, jazz history, and ensembles.

If you are interested in water, the environment, sustainability, climate change and how humans interact with and impact local to global resources, then you may want to learn more about the Aquatic Resources Program (AQUA) at StFX. AQUA uses an interdisciplinary approach - combining natural and social science perspectives - to motivate student engagement and foster understanding of water resource issues - both marine and freshwater.

Computer Science (CS) is the study of computation. For any given problem, a central question is whether a solution can be computed, and, if so, what are the most efficient and practical ways to carry out the computation. Computer science also involves questions that have the potential to change how we view the world.

In the StFX History Department, you can count on distinguished historians to offer you excellence in teaching and historical scholarship. The department offers fascinating courses on themes such as war, empire, myth and memory, religion, gender, sexuality and race. Taking courses in history will prepare you to be an engaged and informed citizen and provide you with a variety of marketable skills for today’s job market - from analytic thinking to communication and research expertise.

Politics is central to addressing the shared concerns of citizens, and political science highlights the underlying forces that drive and constrain power and government. As a StFX Political Science student, you will study how power is used in politics and public life. This involves the analysis of government structures, historical political trends and the role of ideas and ideologies in politics, both nationally and globally.

Anthropology is the study of humans. Of course, scholars working in other disciplines also study humans: sociologists study human societies; medical researchers study human bodies; philosophers study human thought. Anthropologists draw on ideas and knowledge from all of these fields and then add their own particular perspective. As a StFX Anthropology student, you will look at the social world and ask fundamental questions about the development and behaviour of human societies.

As a student of Applied Forensic Psychology, you’ll learn how psychology research and practice applies to a criminal and social justice context. AFP captures the integration of clinical psychology as an applied professional discipline (mental health assessment, diagnosis, treatment, consultation) and forensic psychology as an experimental discipline. 

Classical Studies explores the influence of Greek and Roman culture throughout the centuries. The study of classical literature is a companion and tool to all other liberal arts courses; StFX’s dedicated humanities professors understand this and are committed to helping you grasp their culture and traditions in philosophy, theology, literature, art, and history.

Psychology is the scientific study of thoughts, feelings, and behaviour. It is often the key to better understanding ourselves and others, and why we as humans do the things we do. Studying psychology at StFX will give you insight into the ways that psychological scientists pose research questions, investigate those questions, and apply it to solve problems in the real world.

Catholic Studies at StFX is a program that uses courses in art, history, literary studies, religious studies, philosophy, and the social sciences to provide you with a wider perspective on the influences of Catholicism in world culture and history as well as on moral and spiritual life. The program emphasizes the significant contribution of Catholicism to the arts, sciences, society, human fulfillment, and the overall human condition.

The best people to address environmental issues, from local waste management to global climate justice, are ones who have a solid grasp of societal dynamics as well as rigorous scientific analysis. The Bachelor of Arts and Science in Climate and Environment is an interdisciplinary program that fosters critical thinking and problem solving. You’ll take courses in the arts and sciences, providing you with a wide-ranging perspective on the dynamics of climate and environmental issues.

Economics explores issues of central importance to the human condition at the local, national and global levels. These issues include unemployment, inflation, poverty and inequality, pollution and environmental degradation, sustainable economic development, depletion of fish stocks and other resources, international economic interactions, budget deficits and national debts.

The English Department at StFX is characterized by an effort to fuse current research with excellence in teaching to offer students courses and degree patterns that foreground the historical diversity and contemporary value of the broad skill set an English degree offers. With English, students can develop their communication, research, and writing skills all through the lens of fascinating literature across a host of periods, genres, and mediums.
