The Undergraduate Anthropology Program at Brandon University encompasses three of the discipline’s four traditional major sub-fields: Socio-Cultural Anthropology, Archaeology, and Biological Anthropology.

Brandon University’s Department of Sociology prepares you for active participation in the world around you by involving you in study, discovery, accumulation, and dissemination of knowledge about societal and community processes, issues, problems and needs.

The Drama study at Brandon University is unique because it is an efficient, hands-on, workshop-based program. All courses are taught by professional actors, directors and writers who constantly touch with the ‘real’ world of professional theatre.

Political Science is concerned with the study of the political actors, institutions and processes that affect our daily lives. A healthy democracy requires an understanding of how governments work, how decisions are made, and the input that we as ordinary citizens can have in shaping our community. At the same time, studying political science also helps us understand the world around us, and some of the global events and forces that shape politics in Canada and at the international level.

We live in an increasingly complex world where changing trade patterns, new political alignments, rapid technological growth, pressure to compete globally in international markets and the rapid depletion of natural resources are accelerating the rate of social change. In this situation, we all have questions about environmental sustainability, population decline, safe disposal of hazardous waste, and maintenance of safe and secure access to fresh potable water supplies, access to high-quality medical care and the future of the family farm. These questions need to be balanced against the perceived benefits of continuous economic growth and development, increased industrialization, quality of life and full-time employment.

Language is our basic tool for learning and communication. Technology makes it possible to send messages instantly around the world, but effective communication requires an understanding of foreign languages and cultures. Language study broadens your general knowledge and cultural awareness and helps develop your powers of expression. The study of ancient languages and cultures can help you understand the development of our modern languages and society.

Improvise a scene, be a Shakespearean hero, improve your voice, tell a story, learn what makes a character tick, even perform in public! The study of drama is far from a vocational exercise. Familiarity with theatre and other arts provides essential life skills that manifest themselves in a variety of employment settings.

This program introduces students to a broad range of technological and environmental risks with an emphasis on how social and physical factors interact in disasters. Graduates of the program are able to assist with all aspects of emergency management, including traditional preparedness and response activities as well as recovery efforts to help people affected by disasters get their lives back to normal, and mitigation planning to prevent future damages.

In Creative Writing classes, students can develop the skills to tell their own stories. Students receive expert guidance in how to write poems and plays, screenplays and short stories, works of creative non-fiction, and multimedia projects. English students will develop skills in literary and textual analysis, critical thought, academic writing, creative writing, written and oral communication, knowledge of historical literary periods, literary genres, and national literatures.

Native Studies focuses on how colonialism – both historical and contemporary – impacts Indigenous nations, as well as on the many forms of resistance to it. Our courses draw primarily upon the work of indigenous scholars, and emphasize indigenous approaches to knowledge. Many span diverse geopolitical contexts.

Why did the Soviet Union collapse? Has the role of women in society changed? Why has Quebec nationalism been so persistent? How did the European enlightenment affect the way we think about the world around us? How did colonialism shape the modern global economy? Where does Manitoba fit into all these developments?

What is Philosophy about? It’s about the power of ideas — to change people, and to change the world. Thinking, understanding, and asking the big questions. Demanding answers. Challenging common sense and popular opinions.

The Visual and Aboriginal Arts program provides professional preparation for careers in the visual arts. The program offers a technical, academic and practical environment for the creative visual process. As a well-rounded education in visual art, it includes studio practice and the exposure to issues, ideas and histories of both Western and Aboriginal art.

Societies are confronted with three basic questions when managing their economic resources. Which goods and services are required and how much of each should be produced? What techniques should be used to produce these goods and services? What allocation of these goods and services should be made? Economists help society to understand why interest rates fluctuate and oil prices rise and fall. They assist society in using its economic resources wisely. Courses in the Economics Department can be divided into three categories.

Gender and Women’s Studies (GWS) invites students to challenge prevailing notions of gender and sexualities, and to learn about gender relations as they have been constructed culturally, globally, historically, and institutionally. Through theoretical and practical investigation, students develop the critical knowledge and skills to explore the intersections of gender, sex, race, class, sexuality, (dis)ability, colonialism, imperialism, citizenship, and transnational identity while paying attention to power, oppression, and resistance. Students engage in dialogue about such topics as: feminist and queer activisms, transnational poverty and precarity, diverse masculinities, popular culture and media, reproductive justice, racial politics across borders, and war and violence.
