Canadian politics and society are becoming more diverse and more global. New opportunities are open to those who are equipped to meet the challenges of a changing Canada and a changing world. Political science helps students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels to be a part of those opportunities, and to direct their lives and careers, by providing the intellectual tools needed to understand and critically analyze real world issues, conduct research and develop solutions to complex problems.

Economics is the study of how societies provide for the well-being of their citizens and residents as well as public policies to promote well-being. It is a discipline which examines the behaviour of consumers, employees, business, government and organizations and their interactions. How the economy performs – and provides us with the quality of life that we want - depends on how well all these different sectors interact.

The minor in Anthropology provides exposure to the field in general, and permits a student to focus on one of three subdisciplines currently available within the Anthropology Program at UNBC. The Minor would complement a Major Program in a variety of disciplines, including First Nations Studies, Women's Studies, History, Biology and Environmental Studies.

UNBC Geography is a vibrant community of human and physical geographers. In addition to teaching our undergraduate courses, our faculty members supervise graduate students in a range of graduate programs. This degree provides students with comprehensive training in the study of human geography, emphasizing the cultural, social, economic, and political connections between people and their environments. 

UNBC’s English program includes course offerings in Canadian, British, American and International English literatures as well as world literature in English translation, and literary theory. Key areas include First Nations Literature, Canadian Literature, Comparative Literature, Women’s Literature, Feminist Criticism and Theory, literature and media technology, and the relationship between literature and other disciplines. 

The Bachelor of Arts (General) degree provides a broad education in the arts. Students are required to complete 120 credit hours including a minimum of 60 credit hours of upper division course work. Ninety credit hours (including 30 credit hours at the upper level) must consist of Humanities and Social Science courses. Historians study what people have thought, said, and done in the past, and they help students think critically about how historical processes shape the present. The study of history contributes to critical thinking, helps to develop intellectual maturity, and assists students to present ideas clearly and accurately. Courses in our department blend thematic and geographic approaches to the study of history.

Indigenous studies is a diverse discipline unified by our engagement with Indigenous peoples and communities in a reciprocal manner, which forefronts Indigenous ways of knowing and knowledge systems, and respects their diversity and right to self-determination. Given the sordid history of Indigenous-settler relations around the world, we are well aware of the need to work towards equity, diversity, and inclusion and actively work to combat all forms of discrimination and prejudice in our teaching, research, and service to the community.

Our world is rapidly globalizing, bringing exciting opportunities and daunting challenges. Global and International Studies, hereafter referred to as Global Studies, seeks to tackle this brave new world in all its complexity. We train students to be global citizens, global thinkers, and global problem-solvers, and prepare them for global careers in academia, business, government, and the non-profit sector, among others.

Women’s Studies is an interdisciplinary field dedicated to studying the historical, cultural, literary, and societal role of women and gender. UNBC’s program has strengths in areas such as women’s and gender history; gender, literature, and literary theory; gender, colonialism, and post colonialism; gender and globalization; feminism, justice, and ethics; gender and health; and gender and international studies.

Sustainability studies have emerged as one of the most in-demand undergraduate and post-graduate degree programs in an era of unprecedented environmental and social change. Here at UNBC we offer students the opportunity to learn about important environmental and sustainability challenges, and develop innovative and impactful solutions as engaged environmental citizens.

Anthropology is the integrated biological and sociocultural investigation of humankind, from the time of our pre-human ancestors to the present, including the study of both small- and large-scale societies. The program includes courses in archaeological, biological, linguistic and sociocultural anthropology. While a small number of mandatory courses will ensure that all students in the program share basic understanding of the range of anthropological approaches, students are able to select courses within the program and from other parts of the curriculum to focus on specific interests.

Besides literacy and numeracy, citizenship and diplomacy are fundamental skills needed to achieve a good quality of life. Citizenship includes both the rights and duties of membership in a political community. Diplomacy is the art and practice of reaching agreements through negotiation. A healthy democracy requires the active and informed participation of its citizens, but this is only possible with a good understanding of its political institutions, processes and issues. Political Science is the discipline devoted to the systematic investigation of citizenship and diplomacy in local, national and international communities.
