This BA (Honours) in Arts and Humanities (Art History) degree gives you the freedom to combine the study of different subject areas in the arts and humanities. You'll develop a specialism in art history, exploring art and visual culture across different periods and places. You can combine this with a second specialism or choose to develop broader interests in classical studies, creative writing, English language, English literature, history, modern languages, music, philosophy, and religious studies.

The Academy of Art University’s School of Art History BA program is a unique major that addresses the traditional art historical study through the analysis of visual culture from antiquity to the present. Complemented with fine art studio coursework (12 units), the BA allows for students to engage in critical and research-based analysis of art and architecture, learning to study the visual culture through its role and influence on different cultures and periods. With internationally recognized faculty and access to a rich offering of coursework, the AAU’s Art History BA prepares students for a career in art-related fields: e.g. in art galleries, museums, foundations, archiving, publishing, and public arts administration.

This BA (Honours) in Art History and Visual Cultures degree will equip you with the knowledge and critical skills to investigate works of art, images, objects and architecture, from the local to the global and from prehistory to the present. This will be a rich and rounded experience as you discover the power of images and works of art to influence debates and shape everyday life.

A minor in Art History is an excellent complement to a wide variety of major programs. An Art History minor gives students historical, critical and theoretical breadth to core concepts and skills in the disciplines of the Visual Arts, strengthening critical thinking, writing and communication skills, and developing students for intellectual life. It also provides knowledge useful to museums, galleries and arts administration. Art History courses offer rigor in terms of periods studied and concepts central to education in art history.

The Art History Concentration provides a strong foundation in the field of art history, with courses in contemporary art, American art history, European art, African art, alongside foundational courses that introduce students to European and non-wester traditions. The concentration includes an internship requirement, and students have interned at professional art galleries, museums and non-profits.

Bachelor of Art in Art History track in the BA in Art provides a course of study for students with an interest in the ways people have expressed themselves visually across history. Our Art History graduates go on to pursue careers in museums and non-profits, assisting private collectors, teaching in K-12 and higher education, and working in a variety of other fields calling for a well-rounded education with an understanding of both history and culture. Students in this track focus on what is often referred to as "material culture," the objects created by humans that are part of their lives; this includes everything from clothing to paintings, buildings to jewelry.

We offer a variety of approaches for art history majors, ones structured around your individual interests and career plans. Our students construct their studies with the aid and direction of the department advisor and a faculty sponsor, following three areas of concentration.

The art history courses at Lindenwood place the methods and objectives of art history into their many contexts in this top-ranked program. Relationships among cultures over time, including our own, become apparent through the course of study through real experience and internships. As a student, you will develop an appreciation for the innate desire to create that is basic to the human experience and hone your written, oral, and visual presentation skills, and explore state-of-the-art technology, like AI and virtual reality. Through relationships with international Universities, students also have ample opportunity to study abroad short-term or for a full semester.
