Africana studies is the study of Africans and African-descended peoples. It offers a multidisciplinary approach to investigate, educate, promote, and value the contributions and experiences of Africans and African-descended peoples worldwide.

The Latin American and Caribbean Area Studies Program (LACAS) offers an interdisciplinary approach to the study of Latin America, the Caribbean, and people of Latin American and Caribbean descent in the United States. LACAS majors examine culture and economic and social problems throughout the Americas. By choosing this central, students not only learn more about a range of cultures and societies but also about global interconnectedness.

African-American Studies is an interdisciplinary degree-granting program within in the Department of Africana and American Studies that explores the history as well as the political, economic, social, and cultural circumstances of people of African descent everywhere. The program's major and minor ground students in a curriculum that is global in scope, covers a broad spectrum of topics in the arts, humanities, and social sciences, and provides a comprehensive liberal arts education.

Sewanee’s African & African American studies minor comprises courses from across the spectrum of humanities and social sciences. It will encourage you to consider race and its intersection with class, gender, ethnicity, religion, and sexuality—especially how these concepts have shaped the historical and contemporary experiences and contributions of people of African descent.

Africana Studies is a liberal arts program offering a BA chelor of Arts in Africana Studies and a Minor in Africana Studies. This program provides all students with the opportunity to study the history, culture, and lived experiences of people of African descent–on the African continent and throughout the world. Students will study the influence of Africa and people of African descent on the world-at-large, learn interdisciplinary methods to investigate the social construction of race and racism, and practice research and problem-solving skills. The Africana Studies curriculum encourages the development of critical thinking skills while challenging students to explore new ideas, seek new connections, and become actively engaged in the gloBA l community.

The Department of African and African American Studies (AFR) provides students with a scholarly understanding of the cultures, thought, politics, social life, material structures, and ongoing struggles that define the Black experience.

Author Dorothy West wrote, “To know how much there is to know is the beginning of learning to live.” As an MSU Denver Africana Studies major, you will come to learn “how much there is to know” about the global African experience — and in the process, come to understand more about the world and how you want to contribute to it. By combining the study of history, literature and the social sciences with a focus on Black communities worldwide, MSU Denver’s Africana Studies program will illuminate the profound influences people of African descent have had on civilization. As part of your in-depth exploration of Africana Studies, you will complete a capstone research course/seminar, receive opportunities for internships, travel study and relevant campus leadership experiences.

The Department of African Studies at Howard University is one of the oldest African Studies departments in the United States, housed in one of the largest historically Black institutions in the United States. The Department of African Studies offers B.A., M.A., and Ph.D degrees in African Studies. Our department focuses on taking an interdisciplinary approach to the study of contemporary Africa. Our students go on to enter numerous fields, including but not limited to education, international development in multilateral institutions and nonprofits, civil service (in the U.S. and throughout Africa), and graduate programs in countries around the world. We provide a quality liberal arts and social science education that prepares students for a wide range of paths and careers.

This major introduces students to the social, cultural, historical, and artistic dimensions of global African Diaspora and Black communities in the United States, Africa, Europe, Asia, the Caribbean, Latin America, and Pacific regions of the world.

The African American Studies minor provides an interdisciplinary investigation of the origins, experiences, conditions, accomplishments, and contributions of people of African ancestry in the Americas. The program is designed for all students who want to deepen their understanding of African Americans by studying their earlier history in Africa, their transition to the New World, and their diasporic experiences in the Americas.

The Africana studies major is designed for students with interest in shaping the world. In the Africana studies major, students will understand the complexities, struggles, and successes of people of African descent that exist throughout the world.

African American African Studies (AA AS) allows you to study global perspectives of African American and African history, literature, and culture. Our courses incorporate the perspectives and methodologies of different liberal arts disciplines to shed light on the tremendous diversities and overlapping histories within the wider black world. AA AS also offers two African languages in its undergraduate curriculum: Swahili (spoken throughout eastern, central, and southern Africa) and Somali. Our graduates have gone on to successful careers in education, business, medicine, law, the arts, journalism, local and transnational advocacy work, and foreign affairs.

A Bachelor of Arts degree in African American Studies is designed to hone and enhance students’ research, writing, and critical thinking skills through an interdisciplinary approach.
