Africa is fascinating! In today’s globalised world, the continent plays an increasingly important role in international social and cultural developments. Would you like to explore the many sides of Africa and its impact on the rest of the world, while also learning one of its languages? Our African Studies BA programme will give you a truly multidisciplinary perspective on the continent.

This is an interdisciplinary BA Hons in African Studies consisting of five modules of which two are compulsory.

Africana studies is the study of Africans and African-descended peoples. It offers a multidisciplinary approach to investigate, educate, promote, and value the contributions and experiences of Africans and African-descended peoples worldwide.

The course consists of five modules. Modules 1 (Research Essay), 2 (Grammar of the Main Language) and 3 (Literature of the Main Language) are compulsory. The student chooses two other modules from two possibilities: a) Literature: Poetry, Prose, Drama, Oral Art and b) Linguistics: Sociolinguistics, Phonology and Morphology, Syntax and Semantics, Translation Studies

At Carleton, you can structure your BA according to what you want to achieve. You can pursue an intensive four-year Honors degree or a three-year General program. You can choose a minor subject to complement your major subject and you can, in certain cases, pursue a concentration or a specialization—a set of courses directed towards a designated area of expertise, such as African studies, anthropology, linguistics, etc.

The Latin American and Caribbean Area Studies Program (LACAS) offers an interdisciplinary approach to the study of Latin America, the Caribbean, and people of Latin American and Caribbean descent in the United States. LACAS majors examine culture and economic and social problems throughout the Americas. By choosing this central, students not only learn more about a range of cultures and societies but also about global interconnectedness.

In that nagging program in Afrikaans (Honneurs, Masters degree and Doctor degree), human existence is undercut by that simbole, mites, metaphor and drafted what mediate human existence. Soos in all those other humanities is understanding of that human existence that purpose. In that subject, Afrikaans is language and has drawn this means to this end. In order to undermine that person and the way in which that person understands the world, study the language that person uses to express this world, to sigself and to the world in which he / she lives.
