The Department of English and Foreign Languages offers studies in the areas of English and Foreign Languages. Besides, the department supports the university's General Education program by offering courses designed to develop students’ language and communication abilities, their knowledge of literature and the humanities, and their growth in Christian perspective in these areas.

The aim of the Division of Languages and Literature is to provide high-quality instruction in the study of literature, composition, English pedagogy, communication, philosophy, and foreign languages in order to develop critically literate scholars, writers, and educators prepared to engage a global society.

The Bachelor of Arts in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) at Great Northern University will provide you with a strong foundation in the principles and practice of English language teaching either abroad (TEFL – Teaching English as a Foreign Language) or in an English-speaking country (TESL –Teaching English as a Second Language).

The Adolescence Education: English program requires completion of an English major, while simultaneously completing a second major in education, with courses in pedagogy specific to the content that will be taught.

Students have access to internships with prominent employers, with recent opportunities at BlueCross BlueShield, Shea’s Performing Arts Center, and British Petroleum.Students learn investigative, enterprising, and creative strategies writing professionals use in their everyday work.Our study abroad experience in England allows students to explore literary and historical sites while learning about English culture.Student researchers and faculty work together on unique projects. Recent experiences include investigating the 1692 witch trials in Salem and examining rare Elizabethan documents in London’s British Library.

The Bachelor ofArts (B.A.) degree consists of three components – the Bachelor of Arts core, a major area of study, and an optional minor area of study.
