83 Performing Arts Associate of Arts Programs

The two-year Associate of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre has US accreditation with the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). This program offers a conservatory and holistic approach to musical theatre training, one that not only concentrates on a participatory performance perspective but also prepares students for a wide and exciting range of careers available in the performing arts industry.

The Theater Arts Department provides opportunities to study the art and the craft of theater. Students who enroll in the Associate in Arts in Theater Arts for Transfer degree are encouraged to develop academic and artistic skills through coursework and production opportunities, enabling them to be successful in further study or employment.

The Department of Dance offers an Associate Arts Degree in Dance that provides an extensive curriculum in dance theory and hands-on technical and experiential practice in the context of a broader education within the Liberal Arts. Our dance courses meet CSU/UC transfer requirements.

Considering a music transfer degree as an option? TCC offers an Associate of Arts (DTA) degree with a Music Specialization. The following course set fulfills the requirement of the Specialization in Music for the Associate of Arts Degree and provides a clear, music-focused pathway for students to chain music courses together in a meaningful and transfer-relevant way. This specialization prepares students to transfer as Bachelor of Arts in Music majors, or Bachelor of Arts majors. It also prepares students with a solid framework of music knowledge, allowing them to potentially enter the music industry workforce.

The Associate in Arts in Dance is designed to prepare students to demonstrate competence and discipline in the study of dance technique, performance, and choreography and to demonstrate proficiency in group choreography and solo dance skills. Completing this curriculum will demonstrate commitment to the serious study of Dance in technique and choreography and provide comprehensive preparation for upper-division work. Careers for dance graduates typically include performing, teaching, art administration, choreography, dance therapy, and health and fitness specialists.

The Associate of Arts Degree (AA) in Dance is designed for students planning to transfer to a four-year university to major or minor in dance. A comprehensive dance education will develop skills required to create, perform, communicate, and understand dance.

The Theater Arts major offers the fundamental study and understanding of the theater. This allows students to develop their practical skills and talents as well as their intellectual ability to think creatively and critically.

The Mission of the Music Department is to provide students the means to accomplish their goals in music with an educational program that prepares them to contribute as artists, educators, audience members, and supporters of the arts. Our standard is to meet the cultural, educational, and social needs of the community through excellent musical performances, school visitations, workshops, and masterclasses. At the heart of the department are outstanding arts experiences, superior teaching, and access to an aesthetic learning education. A systematic course of study that fosters meaningful cultural experiences in the performance, understanding, and appreciation of the art and discipline of music.

Music is a broad-based academic discipline with foundational coursework in theory and performance. By providing a theoretical understanding of the development and creation of music, along with requisite technical proficiency, it is expected that these skills will be used to demonstrate musical sensitivity and creativity as a soloist or in the context of a musical ensemble. To further foster these skills, optional courses in the areas of piano and music history should also be taken.

Laney College offers four Music A.A. Degrees and a variety of Certificates of Achievement. Current degree summaries and course requirements are linked below. Be sure to consult with a counselor and the Music Department Chair when beginning a new program. Those interested in completing the AA-T should enroll in Music 150 instead of piano, voice, guitar, or percussion classes. Look for the section of Music 150 that meets at the same time as the piano, voice, guitar, or percussion class it replaces.

The Music Department provides students a wide range of opportunities to learn music and grow as a performer. Our instructors bring diverse skills and approaches to teaching. Student ensembles at Edmonds College have numerous performance opportunities throughout the academic year.

The College of San Mateo provides a creative environment where every student may become enriched through an active association with the art of music and a faculty who are active in the music profession.

Our Film program specializes in film and media studies, film history and criticism, and the new global media culture. Individuals may obtain an A.A. in Film, which trains them in the history, theory, and craft of diverse styles of film art. Many graduates continue their education at a four-year university, majoring in subjects such as film, television, digital media, or theater.

The Electronic Music major combines the areas of music, electronics, and computer science, with a primary emphasis on music. Completion of a Bachelor's degree in Electronic Music expands career opportunities to include performer, producer, recording engineer, and sound engineer.

The Dance Program offers practical courses in Ballet, Modern, Jazz/Hip-Hop, Tap, Strength and Stretch / Pilates, Barre, and Choreography/Performance Production. Dance students who choose to be more involved have additional opportunities to choreograph, perform, and attend conferences such as the annual American College Dance Association conference and other outreach projects on campus and in the community.
