23 Music Associate of Arts Programs

Considering a music transfer degree as an option? TCC offers an Associate of Arts (DTA) degree with a Music Specialization. The following course set fulfills the requirement of the Specialization in Music for the Associate of Arts Degree and provides a clear, music-focused pathway for students to chain music courses together in a meaningful and transfer-relevant way. This specialization prepares students to transfer as Bachelor of Arts in Music majors, or Bachelor of Arts majors. It also prepares students with a solid framework of music knowledge, allowing them to potentially enter the music industry workforce.

The Mission of the Music Department is to provide students the means to accomplish their goals in music with an educational program that prepares them to contribute as artists, educators, audience members, and supporters of the arts. Our standard is to meet the cultural, educational, and social needs of the community through excellent musical performances, school visitations, workshops, and masterclasses. At the heart of the department are outstanding arts experiences, superior teaching, and access to an aesthetic learning education. A systematic course of study that fosters meaningful cultural experiences in the performance, understanding, and appreciation of the art and discipline of music.

Laney College offers four Music A.A. Degrees and a variety of Certificates of Achievement. Current degree summaries and course requirements are linked below. Be sure to consult with a counselor and the Music Department Chair when beginning a new program. Those interested in completing the AA-T should enroll in Music 150 instead of piano, voice, guitar, or percussion classes. Look for the section of Music 150 that meets at the same time as the piano, voice, guitar, or percussion class it replaces.

Music is a broad-based academic discipline with foundational coursework in theory and performance. By providing a theoretical understanding of the development and creation of music, along with requisite technical proficiency, it is expected that these skills will be used to demonstrate musical sensitivity and creativity as a soloist or in the context of a musical ensemble. To further foster these skills, optional courses in the areas of piano and music history should also be taken.

The Music Department provides students a wide range of opportunities to learn music and grow as a performer. Our instructors bring diverse skills and approaches to teaching. Student ensembles at Edmonds College have numerous performance opportunities throughout the academic year.

The Music AA-T at GWC is designed to prepare students to successfully transfer to a CSU campus as Music Majors. Due to the fact that Music Majors begin major coursework in the freshman year, students must successfully complete all of the required courses and pass a keyboard proficiency test to be awarded the Music AA-T.

The Associate of Applied Arts in Performing Arts (Music Concentration) is designed for students who desire formal music training - either as a two-year degree or as the first two years of serious music study toward a four-year university Bachelor of Music degree; those who seek potential careers in music to include performing, composition, and teaching; and those who wish to enhance their music performance skills through solo and ensemble performances in band and choir.

Trevecca’s Associate of Arts in music is a two-year degree program that combines a strong liberal arts education with a solid foundation in classical or commercial music. With courses ranging from music theory to commercial music history, this degree prepares you to pursue a four-year degree or a career in classical or commercial music.

The Associate of Fine Arts degree in Music is part of a comprehensive degree preparing students for a career in many facets of music and music education.

This pathway meets requirements for the Associate of Arts-Direct Transfer Agreement (AA-DTA) degree with a concentration in Music. This degree prepares students for transfer to pursue further studies in music, music performance, humanities, business, social sciences, art administration, among other fields. The degree allows students to explore the field of music through history and culture, introductory reading and writing of the musical language, electronic music, and music performance.

The Associate of Fine Arts degree in Music offers a broad-based approach to a career in the music field with an emphasis on performance. This program provides a foundation for students interested in transferring to pursue a Bachelors of Fine Arts degrees at senior institutions in either vocal or instrumental music at the junior level.

The Associate of Arts program is full-time Professional Degree that develops relevant skills in instrumental technique, performance, and musicianship (and/or music production) as they relate to contemporary music styles. Upper level courses personalize your experience beyond instrumental training or music production. As a Professional AA Degree, the AA program does not include general education requirements and may not transfer to another institution. However, the six quarter credits will transfer into LACM’s Bachelor of Music or Bachelor of Arts program. You can major in Music Performance (with an emphasis in Bass, Brass & Woodwind, Drums, Guitar, or Vocals), Music Production (with an emphasis in Music Producing & Recording or Composing for Visual Media), or Composition (Songwriting).

Schoolcraft’s Associate of Fine Arts (AFA) degree is designed for students who intend to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in any fine arts field. It allows the student to establish a strong academic foundation in arts and complete courses to fulfill general education requirements-all before transferring to a Bachelor’s degree program at another college or university. The AFA allows students to focus on a particular discipline within the fine arts, including both music performance as well as music history/culture. Students interested in other areas of fine arts could substitute courses in art, creative writing, literature, theater, or humanities.

The versatile associate degree program is for students who are interested in a career in the field of music. Possible career paths include accompanist, arts management, and music camp director. This degree can also be used as a starting point from which to add on a bachelor’s degree in music or music education after completing the associate degree. Students will perform a variety of musical styles with technical and rhythmic accuracy, tone quality, intonation, musical interpretation, appropriate diction/articulation, and stylistic accuracy both as solo and ensemble performers, in rehearsal and performance on their primary instrument.

The Associate in Arts in Music for Transfer degree (AA-T in Music) provides students with the foundational knowledge to make a successful transition into a Baccalaureate degree in Music at any of the CSU campuses. Students develop musical proficiency in theory, musicianship, and performance on their primary instrument or voice.
