67 Media and Marketing Associate of Arts Programs

An A.A. degree in Communication Studies prepares students for transfer to a baccalaureate institution for a degree in Communication Studies or a related discipline.

The Media Communications Department offers courses in video production, broadcasting, and post-production for digital video, film, radio, broadcast arts, and AV Installation Technologists. There are four major degrees/certificates which offer entry into the industry or transfer to a four-year institution. The courses cover the gamut of authoring, producing, editing, and distributing creative content for continually evolving communications technologies.

This program prepares students for entry-level positions in marketing including sales, social media marketing, and customer service. The curriculum enables students to select from a variety courses to further develop their marketing and management skillsets and career focus.

The Broadcast and Electronic Media degree prepares students for entry-level work as a media producer. This degree focuses on producing audio and video, along with media studies courses. Hands-on courses provide training in writing for media, camera operation, audio recording, video editing and media performance.

The marketing and sales program trains students for high-demand careers in Merchandising, Sales and Customer Service, Planning and Promotions, Advertising and Public Relations.

Communication is the study of how humans construct meanings through interactions. Courses in this area may focus on the knowledge and skills needed to communicate effectively in oral, written, or visual forms; on the study of language and culture; and/or on a critical understanding of the structures and patterns of different kinds of communication as they affect individuals and society. Studies in Communication, Media, and Languages are designed for students interested in pursuing further studies in English, Journalism, Mass Communication, Media Studies, Communication Studies, and World Languages at four-year institutions. It may be useful for students interested in pursuing careers in communications, graphic design, journalism, law, marketing, public relations, radio and television, translating, and writing, among others.

The Associate of Arts degree at LaSalle College Vancouver prepares graduates for further study in a Faculty of Arts bachelor’s degree program at one of British Columbia’s universities. The program provides students a comprehensive liberal arts education in a supportive and nurturing learning environment and supports the development of strong critical thinking, communication, and research skills sought after by employers. Students can be expected to complete the program in 1 to 2 years.

The Associate of Arts in Journalism for Transfer provides a broad base of education in the discipline and introduces students to journalism and multimedia. It gives students the option of studying journalistic writing for traditional and online media. Completion of the degree provides students with the core skills and knowledge needed to pursue a baccalaureate degree in Journalism.

TCC's program provides an introduction to the concepts, theories, terminology, and current topics in the versatile and popular field of Communications. The Communication Studies (CMST) emphasis of the Associate of Arts (DTA) degree prepares students for the challenges of a world that are shaped by communication that is rich with intercultural exchange. Students specializing in Communication Studies examine and produce work in oral, written, media, and visual communication and practice critical skills in groups and one-on-one settings.

This major will prepare students for employment in the fields of graphic design, illustration, website design, advertising and marketing, and social media marketing. It consists of experiences in applied design, digital imaging, graphic design principles, layout and design, and website design. The focus is on an introduction to design thinking, visual communication, and skills in graphic design, illustration, web design, and graphic art for print and digital delivery.

The Graphic Design associate's degree prepares students for entry-level work in the visual media industry; the degree also serves the needs of students planning to transfer to study Graphic Design at a four-year school.

Berkeley City College’s A.A. Degree in Multimedia Arts—Video Arts prepares students for entry-level jobs in video production and editing fields and provides upgraded skills for those already employed in multimedia or film-related jobs. The program focuses on developing artistic, critical thinking, equipment, and computer skills.

Research has shown that strong communication skills provide the necessary foundation needed to be successful in business, social, and personal relationships. According to the National Communication Association, “At its foundation, communication focuses on how people use messages to generate meanings within and across various contexts, and is the discipline that studies all forms, modes, media, and consequences of communication through humanistic, social scientific, and aesthetic inquiry.”

The Associate in Arts in Communication for Transfer Degree is designed to prepare students to complete the baccalaureate degree in communication upon transferring into the CSU system. Communication skills are essential to forming and maintaining personal relationships, acquiring and excelling in a job, and relating to the world around us. Through the study and practice of interpersonal, professional, and intercultural communication skills, students will learn how their perceptions and self-esteem affect their interactions with others.

The Communication Studies program prepares students to transfer to a four-year college or university to obtain a degree in Communication or a related Social Science field. The courses in the program also improve job attainment and performance skills, providing students with the training necessary for public speaking, customer service, conflict resolution, and interviewing. Students who complete the Associate in Arts in Communication Studies for Transfer will learn and practice cultural awareness, situation analyses, and goal-oriented solutions to practical problems, giving them valuable assets in their future relationships and workplaces. Lastly, this course of study improves students’ logic and reasoning skills, thus providing the foundation for understanding math and science, the world around them, and the skills and insights necessary to think through ethical issues and achieve their goals.
