TCC’s Interdisciplinary Writing Studies Specialization of the Associate of Arts (DTA) degree provides well-rounded academic preparation, real-world writing experience, and work-related skills for transfer to a wide variety of four-year college or university programs and for entry into the workforce. This specialization is also a great choice for students who know they want to transfer but haven’t yet decided exactly what they want to do with their lives. It is especially beneficial to students planning to transfer to the University of Washington Tacoma, due to UWT’s emphasis on interdisciplinary studies.

Our approach is a communicative one; we emphasize proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in every course. In addition to our focus on communication in the target language, our courses provide students with the strong grammatical base necessary to progress beyond the elementary level. Moreover, as our department name suggests, cultural instruction is a cornerstone of each and every course we teach. Beyond language classes, we also offer courses that focus on world cultures. Outside of the classroom, our department is active in advising various foreign language student groups.

The Associate in Arts in Spanish for Transfer (AA-T in Spanish) is designed to provide a clear pathway to a CSU institution for students who plan to transfer and complete a CSU major or baccalaureate degree in Spanish. The Spanish department offers courses that serve as a basis for broad liberal education, advanced degrees, and further study in languages, linguistics, and English Literature as preparation for a teaching credential. It is also supplementary preparation for many professional fields, including emergency services, the legal and medical professions, social work, Business, Hospitality Management, information technology, foreign service, public relations, journalism, translation, and interpretation.

Humanities, Philosophy, and Arts examine human values and experience within a wide range of cultures across the globe and over the course of history. Students will study, interpret, and evaluate classic works in architecture, art, literature, music, philosophy, religion, rhetoric, and the theater, and they will encounter questions to which there are multiple plausible answers. The study of language, philosophy, and rhetoric provides crucial tools for understanding and interpreting human knowledge and experience. Students pursuing the program in the Humanities, Philosophy, and Arts will enhance their skills in critical thinking and both oral and written communication. The Humanities, Philosophy, and Arts program prepares students for further study in the arts, history, humanities, literature, philosophy, communication studies, and/or world languages at a four-year baccalaureate institution and provides an excellent foundation for students interested in administration, communications, law, public service, and teaching.

The Associate of Arts in Theological Studies gives you options; if you simply want to study God’s Word for the sake of your personal growth, you’ll receive a solid foundation in doctrine. You will receive practical training in the application of their studies in ministry to others.

The Associate in Arts Liberal Arts: Cross-Cultural Studies degree program is designed for students who wish for a broad knowledge of liberal arts and sciences with an area of emphasis in Cross-Cultural Studies. This program is an ideal choice for students planning on transferring to the California State University or the University of California as the student can satisfy their general education requirements, plus focus on transferable course work that relates to majors at CSU or UC.

Asian and Asian American Studies (AAAS) provides an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the historical and current experiences of Asian Pacific Americans. It is an academic program and a major for the Associate Arts (AA) degree in the Ethnic Studies Department.

The Associate in Arts in Global Studies for Transfer Degree is designed for students planning to transfer into several related majors such as Global Studies, Global Politics, International Relations, International Studies, and Comparative Government. Through interdisciplinary coursework, students will gain exposure to the global scope of contemporary and historical issues.

The study of humanities is concerned with human experiences and the manner through which they have been expressed. Courses in the Humanities Program examine the historical, social, philosophical, religious, and artistic expressions of different cultures and their diverse perspectives on the sacred as well as secular worlds. The Humanities-Philosophy course offerings at Laney College provide students with an opportunity to delve into the grand, fantastic, and beautiful world of ideas. In addition to providing a transformative approach to the humanistic traditions, the department will also give students the opportunity to develop their critical thinking as well as their writing skills.

Begin with an Associate of Arts degree with a Direct Transfer Agreement into a Bachelor program in English or a related field. TCC offers the Associate of Arts (DTA) degree with a Literature Specialization. In this specialization, students choose courses from ancient to postmodern literature and from traditional to avant-garde readings.

The Associate in Arts (DTA) degree with Specialization in Spanish provides the required preparation for successful transfer into a bachelor's degree program in Spanish at the Junior level. The Associate in Arts degree is an Agreement (DTA) degree. The following course set fulfills the requirement of the Specialization in Spanish for the Associate of Arts (DTA) Degree. This specialization enables students to develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in Spanish, and to analyze, examine and explore oral and written communication using a variety of topics through authentic materials, in all major time frames.

The Associate of Arts (DTA) degree with Specialization in World Languages provides the required preparation for successful transfer into a bachelor's degree program in World Languages at the Junior level. The Associate of Arts (DTA) degree is a Direct Transfer Agreement (DTA) degree. The following course set fulfills the requirement of the Specialization in World Languages for the Associate of Arts (DTA) Degree. This specialization enables students to develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in multiple languages, and to analyze, examine and explore oral and written communication using a variety of topics through authentic materials, in all major time frames.

The Ethnic Studies program is designed to assist all students in developing an understanding and appreciation of diverse peoples and cultures at a local and global level. Using comparative methodologies and honoring community-based knowledge, our programs emphasize a critical understanding of race and race relations. Students may elect among the following majors: African American Studies, Asian/Asian-American Studies, Ethnic Studies, Mexican/ Latin-American Studies or Native American Studies.

The Associate in Arts in History for Transfer degree prepares students for transfer into bachelor's degree programs in History and similar programs at a CSU campus and guarantees admission to the CSU system. History course work in general is helpful to the student who intends to eventually pursue graduate studies in such diverse fields as history, law, and education.

Anthropology is a broad discipline which employs both pure science and practical application to all aspects of human populations. The Associate in Arts in Anthropology for Transfer degree prepares students for transfer into bachelor's degree programs in Anthropology and similar programs at a CSU campus and guarantees admission to the CSU system.

By familiarizing students with a range of methodological tools for the study of social life, while prioritizing the voices and perspectives of marginalized individuals and minoritized communities, we open up an intellectual space within which the term "ethnic" in "ethnic studies" is both critically deconstructed and strategically affirmed.

Associate in Arts in History for Transfer (AA-T) The Associate in Arts for Transfer in History (AA-T in History) provides students the opportunity to cultivate a broad perspective on history. The program is designed to stimulate appreciation for, and understanding of historical and cultural trends, and knowledge of key figures and events. The program is also designed to facilitate learning in such a way as to allow students to make connections to modern institutions and ideas, patterns of change, and progress, and encourage an interest in the 21st-century world.
