The Associate Degree in Fine and Applied Arts offers a wide variety of courses to acquaint students with the creation of and performance in the arts from a global perspective. The courses in this area examine the nature of the fine and applied arts through analysis, synthesis, composition, performance, and technical development. Students will develop techniques appropriate to the art form, engage in the production and performance of the arts, examine aesthetic valuing, and participate in creative expression. This area of emphasis is designed for students interested in exploring various art forms, including digital media, creative writing, dance, film, graphic design, music, photography, communication studies, television, theatre, video, and the visual arts.

An emphasis on Fine Arts provides the student with an understanding of the practices and theories of traditional and contemporary two- and three-dimensional studio arts and an introduction to the history of Western art.

The Associate in Arts in Art is designed to provide students with a comprehensive foundation in drawing, painting, design, digital art, and art history. Students acquire the necessary skills and experience to demonstrate an extensive understanding of materials, technique, philosophy, and aesthetics in the creative process.

The Associate in Arts in Studio Arts for Transfer Degree provides students with a strong foundation in the terminology and principles of the visual arts, two-and threedimensional design, and an introduction to various techniques and media. Topics also explored include the relationship between form and content, historical and contemporary approaches to art and art-making, and personal expression.

In this program, you’ll grow your passion and appreciation for art, while completing the foundational courses required to transfer to a four-year university, college or art school. You’ll develop your artistic skills and techniques through faculty instruction and hands-on studio work in ceramics, drawing, painting, printmaking or sculpture.

Berkeley City College’s A.A. degree in Animation and Game Design prepares students for entry-level jobs in the game and animation fields and provides upgraded skills for those already employed in multimedia and game jobs. The program is interdisciplinary and focuses on developing artistic, animation, critical thinking, and computer skills.

Richmond Community College offers four associate degree programs designed to allow a seamless transition to four-year institutions: Associate in Arts (AA), Associate in Science (AS), Associate in Engineering (AE), and the Associate in Fine Arts in Visual Arts (AFAVA). These programs are designed to offer students the freshman and sophomore years of a baccalaureate-track program. The Associate in Fine Arts in Visual Arts program is designed to prepare students to transfer to one of the UNC Bachelor in Fine Arts (BFA) in Visual Arts programs. The Associate in Fine Arts in Visual Arts degree shall be granted for a planned program of study consisting of a minimum of 60 semester hours of credit (SHC) of college transfer courses. Within the degree program, the institution shall include opportunities for the achievement of competence in reading, writing, oral communication, fundamental mathematical skills, and basic computer use. More specifically, students foster a great understanding of social and personal responsibility, communication, critical thinking, and technical literacy.

Students are introduced to a wide array of artistic platforms and media. Studies include drawing, two and three dimensional design, computer art, color theory, figure drawing, printmaking and painting. Emphasis is placed on the production and development of artwork.

The Fine and Performing Arts curriculum offers instruction in theory, practice and history.
